Officials have inspected the Singkhorn border checkpoint ahead of its possible full reopening next month.

Last week, the Governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, along with government agencies and private sector representatives, visited the Singkhorn temporary checkpoint and inspected the border checkpoint building.

Currently the border can only be used as a temporary loading and unloading point for the transportation of goods between the Prachuap Khiri Khan and Myeik Province in Myanmar.

However, from October 1, officials in Prachuap are aiming for the Singkhorn to fully reopen with government agency staff set to resume operations from the main building at the checkpoint.

The most important detail they failed to mention, is that it will continue to be closed to foreigners. Burmese nationals only, possibly Thais. That is it for now. From what I hear, Thailand has been pursuing the opening of this border for years, for everyone, as it would be a major tourist draw for Prachuap province. Imagine a road directly to the Andaman? The Burmese continue to drag their feet. One explanation I heard from a friend who is married to a Burmese woman who comes from a wealthy family, is that the generals have alot of interests in mining, timber, and other resources, that they generate billions of dollars a year from, and they do not want that border open, to protect their interests.

The other aspect of this, is that Burma is highly restrictive, of granting permits to hotels, to allow foreigners to stay. There are very few accommodation, and very little development, or even roads, in this part of Burma. And according to Google maps, the Burmese have made very little promise with the highway to the sea, even though it was promised to the Thai officials, many years ago.
