Very unusual.

Sounds more like a twisted deal gone bad.

Someone extorts money from you, especially on an island it would be easy to apprehend them at the Ferry or airport before absconding.

Russians always conniving.

Wait until it happens to those "thousands of Youtubers".
Some have to show off their whole life.
Tell their story about back home, the money they made, the house they build in Thailand etc.
Some make a whole house tour and show the security system etc.
Each trip they make is published.

Wait until their house is broken in and later, insurance says "NO".

Who needs to publish their whole life?
Probably they need some income to survive in Thailand and wait until someone wakes up and cracks down on them because they life in Thailand and work in Thailand, most without any work permit.

There might well be more to this incident than revealed in the news story...:whistling:

From the article:

The duo operate a real estate business on the island and arrived last in Thailand earlier this year.
[...]
The men demanded that the couple pay them $3 million in cryptocurrency or the equivalent of ฿112.5 million but Mr Evgenii suggested that he did not have that amount of funds to hand.
[...]
Mr Abdullin told Ko Samui police that he agreed to pay over the money as he felt intimidated by the men and feared for his safety as well as that of his wife and family.
