Giant explosion hits Crimean Bridge, damaging Russian supply route to Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine — A giant explosion ripped across the Crimean Bridge, a strategic link between mainland Russia and Crimea, in what appeared to be a stunning blow early Saturday morning to a symbol of President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions to control Ukraine.

The damage to the bridge, which provided a road and rail connection from Russia to the Ukrainian peninsula the Kremlin illegally annexed in 2014, marks another serious setback to Russia’s war effort in Ukraine by disrupting a crucial supply route.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the government had no timeline for repairing the 12-mile bridge.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, a top law enforcement body, said a truck explosion had ignited fuel tankers as a freight train crossed the bridge. The cause of the truck blast was not immediately clear. After the explosion, thick plumes of smoke and flames could be seen from a distance.

Ukrainska Pravda: SBU behind explosion at Crimean Bridge.

Ukrainska Pravda, an online newspaper, cited law enforcement sources. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) indirectly confirmed the report. "The bridge is burning beautifully at dawn. A nightingale is meeting the SBU in Crimea," the SBU quipped, paraphrasing Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko.

Podolyak: Crimean Bridge explosion result of conflict between Russian military, law enforcement.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor to the President’s Office, said that the explosion that occurred at the Crimean Bridge on Oct. 8 is the result of a conflict between Russia's Security Service (FSB) and private military companies on one side, and Russia’s Defense Ministry and General Staff on the other.

I expect another strike to finish the job.

I’m not sure that is necessary or wise.

Ukraine has very sound military reasons to leave Russian troops with an easy exit route.

‘Backs against the sea’ is a motivation for fierce resistance, demonstrated through military history.

They have no motivation, they'll surrender.

They also have sound reasons for trapping them into a surrender or killing them in combat if they don't. Supposedly, these are Russia's best troops seeing action. Why let them escape to fight another day? Especially if their morale is low and they are likely to surrender.

What they have done is show that they can destroy the bridge if they wish.

It is a huge blow to Russian prestige - their military is not capable of securing the bridge.

The Russian logistics and supply systems have already proven themselves to be ramshackle. This will both degrade and disrupt them further and most importantly, demonstrate to the world and to the Russian people just what Ukraine can do.

Add to that the knowledge ( apparently widespread in Russia) that as it stands the military is apparently unable to feed, equip and train their newly mobilised troops, without Ukraine putting the boot into their lines of communications.

Not good for morale, military or civilian.

they have even better military reasons to prevent the removal of Ruzzian heavy equipment over that bridge. soldiers will have no trouble fleeing using small boats, ferries, etc. but they will have to leave their tanks behind.
