Thai immigration withdraw tourist visas of two CNN reporters

Thai immigration officials have withdrawn the visas of two CNN reporters who entered the crime scene of Thursday’s mass killings at the child care centre in Nong Bua Lam Phu province, Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, deputy national police chief said.

 

He said that the two reporters, 47-year-old Anna Coren, an Australian, and 34-year-old Daniel Hodge, a Briton, were escorted from their hotel in Udon Thani by police and taken to Na Klang police station in Nong Bua Lam Phu province for questioning.

 

He said that police want to know from them which Thai officials had allowed them into the crime scene, as they had claimed, adding, that only the police have the authority to grant such permission.

CNN regrets distress caused by coverage of mass murder in northeast Thailand
 

 

CNN International issued a statement today (Sunday), expressing deep regret for any distress or offence its report on the mass shooting in Nong Bua Lam Phu on Thursday has caused and for any inconvenience they may have caused to the police at such a distressing time for Thailand.

 

The statement, issued by Mike McCarthy, executive vice president and general manager of CNN International, said that the CNN news team sought permission from health officials present to enter the child care centre.

 

Had the team understood that the health officials were not authorised to grant such permission, they would not have entered. “It was never our intention to contravene any rules,” according to the statement.

CNN claims Thai officials allow them on massacre site

 

 

CNN claims that they were allowed to report from inside the Nong Bua Lam Phu day care centre, the scene of the mass shooting of dozens of children last Thursday, following outrage among media organisations and online.

 

The news agency responded to a tweet by The Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand (FCCT) that “CNN’s crew was filming at the Nong Bua Lamphu daycare centre with other media in a period when the centre’s police cordon had been removed. While filming, three public health officials exiting the building spoke to the team and told them they could film inside. The team gathered footage inside the centre for around 15 minutes, then left. During this time, the cordon had been put back in place, so the team needed to climb over the fence at the centre to leave.”

 

CNN’s statement was in response to The Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand (FCCT), which issued a statement yesterday, saying that the conduct of the CNN news team was unprofessional and a serious breach of journalistic ethics in crime reporting.

It is a total tragedy what happened their words cannot express what occurred the reporters for CNN had permission from somebody there in the health department I don’t believe they intentionally try to disrespect or do any harm other than report the news and facts it is very disturbing but when they report on CNN what’s happening in Ukraine that is also very upsetting to say the world crimes that Russia Has committed would not be known if they didn’t have reporters covering this is always two sides of the corn that’s depressing the reporting was I think it was factual TIT

It is good that someone higher up got Big Joke back on the leash on this one.

 

He would have wanted to drag this out, but had to cancel the vinyl posters order.

 

This was merely a distraction for the local and semi-foreign press.

CNN reporters on tourists visa?? If they had tourist visa it shows again the outdated visa system and labour laws of Thailand. If they are journalists they should have got proper visas. In several articles we could read that these reporters were allowed to enter the scene. So why condemn them if they got permission and why are there picture of others with the same content not being prosecuted? Soft power to attrack tourists???

When is soccer team was caught up in the cave everybody praise CNN reporting the news obviously somebody up there allowed entry of the reporters inside the building and time media pictures are being shown and nobody is outraged I think the real issue is they are afraid of the questions that the reporters might ask it is a total tragedy what happened but I think coming down on the reporters is not the proper thing to do TIT

My experience with CNN Bangkok in the past was inviting them to join a helicopter trip to a Cambodian village in the jungle to donate satellite equipment so they could access the outside world. The guy on the phone (he was Thai) told me they were not interested but if the helicopter crashed they would cover the story.

CNN are not the only news agency that has zero qualms about filming dead bodies or blood stained walls. Competition for ghastly news items is the norm. Nothing to do with politics, it is about viewership and advertising revenue. You have a remote control and can change channels or just switch off the TV.

 

BTW, I thought it was illegal to work in Thailand without a work permit?

This wasn't really about CNN, or their faux-pas. It was about deflecting the narrative. Crisis Management 101.

 

Other news organizations were, IMO, equally disrespectful, maybe more so, with B-roll of caskets and live shots within temple grounds during prayers. A few of those correspondents complained about CNN on Twitter, so there is plenty of shame to go around.

 

I encourage the CNN bashers to get "it" out of their systems so carry on. You'll feel better, at least for a short while.

 

With the Warner Discovery purchase, and new management (Chris Licht) some of the haters might drift back to CNN?

There are visas for media workers. Why didn't the CNN "journalists" have the correct visas? And why isn't the authorities mentioning that clear violation of the rules? I take it as a message from the government that anyone can work without a work permit and they'll do nothing about it.

I don't get your question.  From what I understand they are kicking them out of the country because the ARE NOT tourists and were working without the proper visa.

I think a 'business' visa is quite easy to get, I had a few.

Why?  Gathering news is their job.  Plus if you believe them, they had permission.

Seems a bit strange to me maybe they were asking too many questions?
Wasn't the murderer a cop being prosecuted for drug trafficking wasn't he? and that's not usually a 1 man job.
Why was the barrier down when they went in with other reporters inside but up when they came out and then someone was waiting to photo's?
And why was Big Joke put in charge of the case?

Seems that, in this case, the idiot was not the ones reporting the story.  The reporters had permission from those they thought had the power to grant the permission.
