Thai Public Health Minister urges public not to include marijuana in government’s plan to eradicate drug problems

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Wednesday, October 12th, urged the public not to include marijuana legalization as a part of the government’s plan to eradicate the drug problems in Thailand.

 

The Minister told reporters before attending a meeting to discuss urgent measures to solve the problem of drugs with the Prime Minister and Public Health officials that the related government agencies – including the Department of Mental Health, the Department of Medical Services, and the Princess Mother National Institute on Drug Abuse Treatment (PMNIDAT), would cooperatively work to seek solutions and solve the issue of drug abuse in the local communities.

 

When asked by reporters if there would be a review of the Cannabis and Hemp Act after the incident of the mass shooting in Nong Bua Lamphu, Anutin said that methamphetamine is a drug but marijuana is no longer a drug, so it was not the same thing anymore. Anutin held firm that he would not support any attempt to decriminalize cannabis as a narcotic drug, as suggested by some government opposition groups.

I believe it should read 'recriminalize' instead of 'decriminalize',

This guy is ill equipped to solve a serious problem, of this nature. He was never qualified for the job, he completely blew the initial vaccination effort, he presided over the closing of the nation to tourism, and the overly draconian restrictions later, which severely damaged the tourism industry, and the local economy, and now after a those failures, he says he wants to lead the nation. A true empty suit. A bottom of the barrel minister. 

 

Waging a war on drugs is like trying to stop the tides from rising. You either approach the problem from within (police reform, legalization, counseling options for addicts, cracking down on highly suspect border officials, etc.), or you just stop the hyperbole and charade.

Sure Thailand has a drug problem .

But that is with chemical drugs like Yaba , Ice etc ...

No problem with Cannabis .

Anutin is right . Something serious has to be done to reduce the amount of illegal drugs . And Guns .

How many people are in prison for smoking or possessing dope? If there's even one, then it's viewed as an illegal substance.....so it probably will be included in the anti drug plan!

Should be none. They were all let out of prison in June.

The issue is with filth like meth. It is endemic and dangerous. Cannabis is as meek as a kitten compared to all of them, alcohol included, and shouldn’t be classed as a drug. He’s right, though doctors and other reefer madness nutters will see there best chance on getting it reclassified now.

I believe he and his party supported the current PTB on the basis that Cannabis would be legalised within a certain timeframe. I also believe he already had a number of "medical" Cannabis farms in operation at that time.

Legalizing Cannabis is one thing, many countries and states have legalized it.  Do you know the history of how Cannabis became illegal in Thailand.  If not look it up.

 

Legalizing all drugs is a dangerous step.  Herion, YaBa, Cocaine, Fentanyl etc is a step too far and dangerous.

Cannabis has been removed from the Narcotics list as published in the Royal GAzette.

 

~ 4,000 prisoners, convicted on Cannabis charges, have been freed.

 

Back-tracking on Cannabis would be a huge loss of face.

 

Meth is the problem, and it is a huge public health crisis. The country runs on meth, and there are whole generations of meth-heads.

 

Maybe get to work on the meth problem.

Difficult to believe the ignorance of those who cannot see the difference between these two completely different substances who's only thing in common was that they were both illegal !
