Mass killing exposes deep problems in Thai society

The shocking mass killing of mostly very young children in Nong Bua Lam Phu province has exposed far-ranging problems in Thai society, law enforcement and healthcare.

Under the spotlight are not only the country’s drug plague but also deep flaws in the police force, lax gun laws, mental health issues and a shortage of psychiatrists.

“If something like this happens overseas, a psychological study [of the perpetrator] is conducted immediately to get to the root of the problem,” said Dr Deja Piyavhatkul, a former medical lecturer and psychiatrist.

Dr Deja explained that such an investigation grants insights into the killer’s mental state, enabling authorities to draw up guidelines that can help prevent a repeat of such terrible violence in the future.

“Such incidents are in fact preventable. The signs can usually be noticed months ahead,” the doctor said.

Such  vague words "This <something> revealed problems in a society: <list of whatever> " can work for any politician.

On my opinion, crazy people can be absolutely in every society.

and there's no predictable behavior patterns for such occurrences...

Not even a sudden shopping spree for weapons and bullets? Some even were displaying behaviour on social media foretelling what they might do.

Nonsense , in Biden's new America they'd be out on bail before the paperwork was finished.

There have been very few mass shootings here, relatively speaking. So, is it a big problem, just yet?

I do agree with urgent reform needed for the police force, the lax gun laws, the mental health issues, with some, and a shortage of psychiatrists. Also, a major problem is the lack of willingness to have one's life examined, and a stubborn refusal to look within for the source of the problem. And lastly, the horrific issue of trying to saving face, and the staggering weakness this creates.

That shows that Dr. Deja posses deep knowledge on "overseas criminal psychology". Likely by watching multiple episodes of popular series about "uber smart US cops'n'lawyers". And yes, Biden's new America is really weird place now.

The really sad part of all this, is that it was recognised, by his superiors, but little or nothing was done to help this Guy with his addiction. He was just shunted out of Bangkok

I am sure that if this Tweaker had received the correct care and medication when he was first diagnosed as a Meth user, then this tragedy would probably never even have happened.

Years of Drug abuse had obviously fried this Guys brain beyond all reasonable ability to function as a sane Human Being

Nobody said he did, it was in response to a more general statement that did not hold water!

Ridiculous statement from someone who ought to know better. In reality he is seeking funds for what would likely be a pointless study of no practical value.

So Land of Smiles is over?

Lone wolf disaffected drug user and mental defective hardly adds up to exposing deep problems in Thai society

Mass killing exposes deep problems in Thai society

Being Thai-specific as the question was posed, there does seem a propensity among males to completely lose it when face has been lost. Upbringing? Accountability?

Posted

Deep problems, so many and as such very hard to deal with, firstly Thai culture regarding loss of face and Thainess, allowing those who were legally allowed to own guns to continue to continue even after loss of that job.

Lax enforcement of Gun laws, but they also applies to ALL laws. Althpough they trumpet reactions, rarely do you see accountability many RTP think they are above the law and that has not changed in over TWO decades.

mental health left mainly to the Villages to police their own with minor medical help, nothing concerted and no-one willing to act constructively.

Compromise and more compromise to try to make people adhere for the sake of the General Public those HIGH Ideals are now lost in the myuths opf time , as peop[le become more informed, something judging by ecucational skills the Thai Government has been hoping to repress for centuries since evolving from an Absolute Monarch to a Constitutional Monarh . Peoples general attitude, Not my problem, not my land, does not affect me , therefore un til it does they do liottle to assist or help to maintain peace and harmony
