Bua Noi, Thailand’s last gorilla, is ironically attracting big crowds after an account of her life spent caged in a Bangkok department store made domestic and international headlines.

International organizations including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Free The Wild have joined the call for Bua Noi’s release, but the owner – Pata Zoo, a private menagerie in Pata Pinklao Department Store – insists the gorilla must stay put for her own safety.

“We have rejected plans to relocate her out of concern that she may not be able to adjust to new surroundings,” the zoo said in a statement. “She has been here for more than 30 years.”

Yeah just keep milking it for another 10 years until it dies.

they are probably correct,  she wouldn't last one hour in Thailand's national park forests as she'd end up being killed by poachers.

No one in their right mind has ever suggested that an elderly, (non-native) gorilla would even be considered to be released to live alone in a Thai forest.

"Yeah just keep milking it for another 10 years until it dies".

Just as any other place that she may be moved to would!

I have never been to where she is housed nor would I go the Thai government have the power to do something about this cruelty but they won’t

What can the government do about a privately-owned, legally kept animal in a legitimately licenced zoo where the animal is being properly cared for (in the context of zoo accommodation)?

There have been no accusations that the animal is being treated cruelly in its particular circumstances except by those who have not seen where it lives and rant that, by their definition, any zoo is a cruel place.

I call BS on this. You can find people who've been there going back years who say that place is awful. Read through some of the other stories published on this over the last few days and you can see comments from people who are actually there. People like Edwin Wiek have never actually been to see for themselves?

Very sad but likely some gruel truth.

A gorilla after 30 years in solitary lock might react aggressive or fearful to other animals.

But still better to give the poor animal a better treatment.

I don't know if he's actually been there himself, I doubt that you know either.  Maybe he's just another one hanging on to third party, "BS", hearsay?

They could ‘remove the zoo licence’ under the guidance and advice of animal welfare experts.

One of the issues is that there are no laws in Thailand which specify the conditions under which animals are caged.

The criticism is that the animal is not being properly cared for...  Or, rather it is but not in the context of zoo accommodation as we know it in the West, but closer to prison accommodation.

Re-housing the gorilla at a facility far more suited to its size and physical needs would be a far better option... and example of such a place would be Safari-world.

There has been a lot of accusation that the animal is not being treated well - there are numerous videos on the internet about this.

The cruelty of these people is beyond belief. She needs to be moved to a decent zoo where she can be properly cared for. She will not survive in the wild.

nonsense ....  she would survive alot better in Uganda with other gorillas than in a Robinsons department store or WETF it is ...

Yet people claim Thais are compassionate animal lovers.

I've never heard such claims.

I'm not convinced she wouldn't survive in the wild with other gorillas ....   at least she'd be free to run play with other gorillas.  At worst she would eventually die,  say in one month or six months,  but she would die happy I'll bet.

Would you be able to go and survive in the wild jungle ?

The world's loneliest gorilla housed in a supermarket cage will only be given a brief taste of freedom before she dies if her owner is paid £700,000, he has said.

Thailand's environment minister had said he wanted 33-year-old Bua Noi moved from the vile 'zoo' to a sanctuary where she could 'experience her homeland and be with other gorillas'.

But now the gorilla's owner says he will only agree if he is paid 30 million Thai Baht.
