Issan has a reputation for being undeveloped and primitive , rather like a tourist going to the USA and telling the taxi driver " I am going to the Mid West and staying in a trailer park for two weeks

  • Guess you've never been to Issan, KK and Korat of some of the biggest cities in TH.

It would be better to ask the person as to why they giggled , how would you expect other people to know why a certain person giggled about something ?

Could have been just a titter. Or even a minor chortle.

Don't get into personal talk with service personnel, it lowers your social standing.

You can keep your social standing, I'll talk to whomsoever I please. My Dad was a taxi driver, it's an honest profession, so why should I be ashamed to talk to a Thai cabbie?

ps. A Thai business man is the last person in the world I aspire to be like.

Jesus wept, you're worried about social standing? Here's a newsflash - farangs have none. That is why Thais call us farangs.

The only standing foreigners have here is based on the size of one's wallet, nothing else. Although I suppose someone who speaks perfect Thai might get a bit more respect.

Take a look at how Thais treat their elderly, then compare it with how elderly foreigners are treated.

as soon as a farang is granted Thai citizenship he is immediately conferred the status of Khun Ying. Don't believe me? Just ask Neeranam ????

How are elderly foreigners treated in Thailand ?

With less respect than elderly Thais.

Does that mean with his foreign appearance he gets the same social standing as Thais? Or did he have plastic surgery?

I have a friend who is Burmese, English is his only language because he was taken to Britain as an infant. I wager on appearance alone he is more socially accepted than this six foot roundeye.

I have heard it called many things but that is a new one to me.

If you know your rhyming slang, buffalo do 'grumble and grunt' .

I find I get plenty of smiles and respect, and I certainly don't go out of my way to demand it. There again I do walk around with a friendly face all the time, life is good.

No, when we get citizenship we are still looked upon as foreigners. I think that is normal. When I walk into a post office, bank, etc. why the hell would they think otherwise if they didn't already know we had become Thai citizens.

Back on subject, there is still a lot of looking down on people for the North East, but it is slowly improving. I know that some of the staff in my office are from the NE, but you will never hear them talking in their local dialect to each other in case others hear them. Sad but true.

No Thai person with any money moves to Issan, but if you manage to make money in Issan you leave pretty quickly.

Also the same way UK people giggle when you say you are going to Thailand, the driver knows that you are probably looking / or have a wife and wonders why you choose to find one in Issan. Its certainly wouldnt be a Thai persons first choice.

In what way ?

Have you seen how Thai people respect their elders, even if they are not technically right the Thai will always believe the elder before any young Thai or old falang.

Lots of trailer trash out there.

Lived with a Udon woman for 2 years and all she could talk about was money money money.

Better stick to the North.

That is a very big brush you have. Stereotyping all women of the NE from your experience with one. Hope she got her money's worth.

She got it , i set up a company for her and she was making more money then me , but still not enough.

That is because she had to work instead of sitting on her tush while the money was handed to her and she was fed grapes by the peasants. Sound like you had a Isaan version of a Jewish American Princess......

Because it's a boring, backward hellscape every Thai living there wants to avoid? Any Thai not living there see you as completely daft.

It could be you. Most people won't keep asking if you set firm limits.
