Thai football fans will have an opportunity to watch the World Cup 2022 finals in Qatar, after the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) agreed today (Wednesday) to set aside only 600 million baht for the live broadcast rights in Thailand.

NBTC Acting Secretary-General Trairat Wiriyasirikul said that most of the NBTC board agreed to finance the actual expenses incurred by the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) for the broadcast rights for 64 matches, but only up to the 600 million baht limit.

He insisted that the allocation of money for the World Cup is within the authority of the NBTC, as it is in line with the objectives of the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Research and Development Fund for Public Interest (BTFP).

600m Of 1.6 Billion Baht Needed To Buy World Cup 2022 Broadcast Rights Approved
by TNR Staff

THE National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) has approved 600 million baht budget for Sports Authority of Thailand to buy broadcasting rights to Fifa World Cup 2022 being held in Qatar from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18 but this does not cover the full cost of 1.6 billion, Thai Rath newspaper and BBC said Wednesday (Nov. 9).

The matches will be broadcast through free TV on all platforms. However the approved budget is 1 billion baht short of the broadcasting rights cost of 1.6 billion baht.

Yesterday it was going to cost 1.6 billion, now it’s down to 600 million. That’s a big discount, or was someone going to trouser 1 billion?

Some reports yesterday that the government is shaking down private industry for the remaining 1.0 billion baht.

Of course it's far too late for them to capitalize on the marketing efforts, so not sure how much success they'll have.

AIS was rumored to be interested in mobile streaming rights, but just not enough time to put together marketing campaigns, aimed at garnering new subs.

Suspect they'll lash something together, make a promise and then get away without paying. Or just paying the 600 m "key money".

A group of private companies will come up with the 1 billion. There are four on board at 200 million each and probably a fifth one coming in today and then they'll announce it.

Yes, of course something will be lashed together. The thought of illegally streaming the matches would be a very bad look for the Kingdom.

The SAT is trying to negotiate FIFA down to 1.2 b (total) from 1.6 b. So they may only need another 600 m?

The fee for the 2018 World Cup was 1.4 b, with the deal settled months before the first match. It was reported that nine companies joined forces to help fund the TV rights: King Power Group, CP, Thai Beverage, Kasikorn Bank, Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS), Gulf Energy Development, PTT Global Chemical (PTTGC), Bangchak Corporation and Carabao Dang.

Not sure Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) should be ponying up cash, they're like 11 b in the hole.

Much more concerned that  Tipmanee Pattaya has stopped  showing  EPL!

Happily watching  all EPL matches and suddenly they stopped showing  them.  Channels previously showing every game now showing soaps, badmington, ladies golf and other assorted  rubbish. What's happened? EPL much better than World Cup!
