I have no idea of the going rate the loan shark use nowadays, but back in the mid 1990s it was 20 baht per 1,000 loaned, per day.

If it was not repaid the next day it was 1020 baht plus interest etc.

35,000 baht even at those old rates is 35,700 baht and going up daily.

Here in the village interest rates can be between 2 and 7 percent for large loans of thousands of bht over many months. For the old ladies borrowing 100 bht a day then they are required to repay between 130 and 150 bht the next day.

That is expensive.

Tasneeporn told police she, in fact, knew the loan sharks but refused to reveal their identities to the press for her own safety.

She may have told the police their identities.

Reminds me of a notorious loanshark system in the Philippines called 5-6. For every 5 borrowed, the debtor pays back 6 within a month. This translates to an interest rate of 20%. Per month.

Borrow 1000 = pay back 1200

10K = 12K

100K = 120K

etc

Loan sharks are a big problem in Thailand. And most people don't go to the police because they know that many loan sharks are connected to the police.

I am not sure if she is brave or stupid to go with this to the police. But in general it would be good for Thailand if more people would stand up against loan sharks.

Obviously it's stupid to borrow any money from them at all. But we are all allowed to make a stupid mistake from time to time. She, and all those other loan shark victims, should get fair conditions to pay the money back.

Bit of a contradiction to expect loan sharks to start offering fair repayment plans and refinancing schemes. Like drug pushers, they want their customers to get themselves in deep.

Sorry I do not believe a word of this story . You would not go to the police and say you have been assaulted and then withhold this information ! The sharks - if they existed - would get you merely for going there and potentially giving the names ! To me, probably an influencer that fell drunkenly over and looking for more followers

Tasneeporn told police she, in fact, knew the loan sharks but refused to reveal their identities to the press for her own safety.

agreed....methnks made up the abduction story and self inflicted the injuries, because her b/f found out she has a big debt.

They should be forced to do that. Or they should go to jail.

And obviously that won't happen in Thailand anytime soon.

Lucky she didn't get a gun pointed in her face, one is left to wonder why she needed 35k in the first place ?

IMO  I wouldn't rule out gambling as it seems the norm here.

Tasneeporn alleged to the police that she was forced into a car by four loan sharks after she failed to repay 35,000 baht that she had borrowed from them.

A loan is a loan... not a gift.

the Thai Chinese lenders would lend 10,000 Baht then take the interest off the top so you would get 8,000 Baht cash with interest at 20% per month for the 10,000 Baht. Same deal for larger loans. Missed instalments increased the debt. The casino rates were about the same.
