Living here it really gets tiresome being told dim lies and it is an insult to be expected to  believe such stuff. 

I hope he pays compensation, covers treatment costs and gets some of these new points on his driving licence for failing to stop. 

He could have put the guy in a wheelchair for the rest of his life, or ended it there and then.

Once again impossible for the driver to admit " I was wrong not to stop and then to run away, I'm sorry"

So many things wrong here. 

The foreigner should know to look right, the left then right again, thanks to Tufty road safety in the 60s. He's obviously been here long enough to know cars don't stop at crossings. 

Why did he allow the guy to sit on his bed?

Here's new one, big foreign company on Eastern seaboard  had another office in Bkk, plus fleet of various vehices (all on hire) and team of drivers.

 

In the first year of start-up/operations many staff did numerous trips to Bkk for meetings and back. Drivers told again and again by company staff to slow down but the owner of the agency where the drivers came from pushed them to drive fast.

 

Many accidents, and after several accidents a snr. cop from a police station along that route came to every accident.

 

One day friend of mine doing this trip and a Thai driver crashes into the back of the company car causing a lot of damage.

 

Cop comes, asks for license of Thai driver os comany car and license of the farang passenger. Cop checks something and says 'this car nevr in accident before and Thai driver of the company car and the foeigners never in car before so he will write up the report they are all responsible and must pay for the dmage to the car and river that had rear ended them.

 

Farang protests, Thai mngr from his company appears on the scene and tells the farang to back off because this is all planned. 

 

Then farang GM fins out and demands an investigation of the 'planned sharing of responsibility' which goes nowhere and comapny ends up paying all the bills.

 

Then a twist, it's discovered that a lady from the leasing company who is responsible for insurance and road tax etc., on all these leased vehicles is pocketing all the premiums and she's got piles of fake insurance policy documents and there's fake stickers on every vehicle.

I wonder how many points he will loose off his licence under the new system come January. Reckless driving causing injury and leaving the scene under stress would be called hit and run elsewhere and be an instant ban. TIT, say sorry and cough up a two wads that would choke a donkey.  One for the victim and a donation for a law enforcement fine (wink wink) and it's all ok.

Many years ago my motorbike was parked outside of a bar, and some fool drove by trying to squeeze in between an oncoming car and the bikes. He smashed into about 5 bikes. Then he gets up and drives away. I asked the bartender if she recognized him and she said, yeah we all know who he is. The police found him within an hour. 

 

We met at the police station. I told him exactly what I thought of him. That he was not a man. That he was a tiny coward for running away. That he was not raised correctly. He was shocked. Guess nobody had ever told him the truth before. He was obviously an overly coddled creep. He even asked me to lie to his insurance company about what happened. I told him that I was not going to help him with his failed life. That was on him. 

 

The issue is that in Thailand's effort to help people to avoid responsibility for their actions, they did not seem to create a hit and run law. So, it is the same if you stop, or if you run. Same seems to apply when someone is hurt or killed. What can one say? Face is one of the greatest weaknesses within Thai society. It is a blight. Face is rife with self doubt, and by subscribing to this weakness, and man or woman is made a far lesser person. I consider the practice of face to be the polar opposite of the practice of Buddhism, which teaches the need for introspection, contemplation, owning up to a problem, and taking responsibility for issues, problems and tragedies that you create in life.

Totally agree! I saw the video on Thai news several times. I couldn't believe it at first. And also, the guy just stepped out onto the road right in front of a speeding vehicle which clearly had no intention of stopping. If it was me I would wait until all vehicles had stopped before even attempting to step out onto the road.

He should be made to pay compensation and all hospital bills, that is the law here. Whether he ran away or not, he still broke the law and went through a red light. Has he played the get out of jail free card and  offered to become a monk for 24 hours which is the norm here?

Pedestrian crossings in Thailand are dangerous. Very dangerous. Use them at your own risk and and if you do, expect to get cleaned up by a nutter like the dude in the D-Max. Or a copper on a Ducati (RIP the good doctor).

 

There is no "lights in your favor" here mate. It's you and your wits against a very unforgiving environment. I avoid them if I can but if I'm forced to use one I try to be hyper-vigilant so that something like this doesn't happen to me.
