Aussie Baggage Handlers Delivering Holiday Cheers

Featured Replies

1) This happens at every airport.

2) The name of the company is Swissport(they are global and operate at many airports)

3) Always buy sturdy and durable luggage.  I travel with a rolling duffle bag and never pack anything fragile.

4) An Australian news channel implied these were employees of Qantas.  This is false.  Luggage is mostly handled by 3rd party contractors and as expected baggage handlers are not paid well.

Just another of quaintqantas CEO Joyce.s  decisions that screw "the flying kangaroo."

No. While "rough" handling is common at many airports, I've worked in ops for a major carrier at Narita and Seoul (and previously for many yrs at LHR/FRA/CDG) and can assure that at Japanese/Korean baggage handlers would NEVER treat pax luggage this way. Different (better?) culture where folks take pride in their work no matter how "simple" or low paid.

The retard raising the bags high and intentionally dropping them was a bit OTT. Obviously in need of a career change. But this may be difficult as he probably has an IQ only slightly in excess of his shoe size.

However, imagine how much longer the process would take if they treated each item with kid-gloves? I don't want to wait at the carousel for an extra hour just so my crappy suitcase doesn't get scuffed.

And this is why i don't travel with my grandmother's antique crystal dining set...

Maybe 3 decades ago there was a dispute with baggage handlers at Melbourne airport. The handlers decided to escalate the situation.

Next shift starts and a large number of off duty baggage handlers arrive at the public area carousel, some with sledge hammers. As bags tip onto the sloped carousel and start their journey there's a 2 step activity:

- Many handlers stomping many times on every bag

- Every bag getting slammed heavily with a number of sledge hammer blows.

All of the above on photo news services, plus photos of the sudden arrival of the CEO of the main airline involved in the dispute. CEO tried to talk tough and tell the handlers he'll ensure they never work again etc...

He immediately gets attacked by several handlers and seriously beaten up.

Urgent announcement - Handlers got what they wanted and same benefits spread immediately to all handlers.

News reports reveal that the handlers were very poorly paid way under anything acceptable as a bare minimum.

But of course not condoning violence.
