Police captain deliberately blocks ambulance with unconscious passenger in back - pays 500 baht fine and sends flowers

Thai Rath reported on a case of a motorist who deliberately refused to get out of the way of an ambulance with its siren blaring with an unconscious old woman in the back. 

 

The driver was a police captain with the Dan Khun Thot force in Nakhon Ratchasima in NE Thailand. 

 

He's paid a 500 baht fine but failed to show up to the rescue organisation to apologize.

 

He sent a bunch of flowers instead.

 

The disgraceful behavior of the RTP captain - named as Pol Col Charnchai Bengjantheuk - was revealed in a damning Facebook video on Sunday morning. 

 

Pak Chong Nana Hospital had requested the help of Sawang Wicha Thammasathan rescue services to go to Nong Sarai sub-district to collect an unconscious 73 year old woman. 

 

On arrival the resce team declared a red alert and arranged to meet another hospital vehicle between the patient's home and the hospital to transfer the patient. 

 

With siren blaring in the area of the Mitraphap Market a Ford refused to get out of the way.

 

Rescue personnel implored the driver politely to move saying over the loudspeaker that there was an unconscious person in the back.

 

The driver - later revealed to be the senior policeman - got out of his pick-up and told the recue personnel:

 

"Can't you see there's a (red) light?"

 

He then got back in his vehicle and appeared to deliberately drive slowly to block the rescue vehicle that was eventually able to get by and make a transfer to the hospital vehicle at the next lights.

 

The cop then followed the Pak Chong hospital vehicle scaring the staff with what appeared to be menacing behavior.

 

Yesterday at 2pm the rescue service chief Wichai Maneeratnakun and staff waited for two hours to get an apology from the policeman.

 

He sent some flowers instead, not bothering to appear in person.

 

His chief at Dan Khun Thot had said he'd be there after going to Pak Chong police to pay his fine.

 

Pak Chong police confirmed he had paid a 500 baht fine for blocking an ambulance.

I think it has to do with loss of face.

I wonder. In every country in the world, firefighters, ambulances and police vehicles have special rights in traffic when they are on emergency duty.

Isn't that the case in Thailand?

If not, then this policeman is obviously absolutely unfit for police service.

I dunno, but you see this kind of thing every day on the roads here.

 

There's a lack of genuine empathy here in general.

 

I think because the local culture doesn't really permit then to express their feelings and emotions at all, they end up just taking it out on others by being as difficult as possible on the roads and elsewhere in general.

No amount of flowers or fine will undo this git's actions. One day, the roles may be reversed and his family or loved one - or maybe himself - may be the one in the ambulance. I guess that warm, welcoming and pleasant demeanour hides a fragile ego and the need to feel 'superior' to the next person in one way or another. Since they can't do that in real life, swallowing their pride and 'face' in front of bosses, customers and people who really are 'bigger' than them, they act this out when they feel they are secure behind the safety of the steel cage that is their vehicle. I guess.

 

I drive extensively in Malaysia and while Malaysian drivers are just as bad (for similar as well as other reasons), they do literally jump out of the way as soon as they see/hear sirens behind them. Even if the emergency vehicle is a few hundred metres behind. If this happens at the lights, EVERYONE WILL STOP regardless of whether it's red or green and allow the emergency vehicle to pass.
