Continuing Sewer smell problem in One bathroom

OK house is in Bangsarey its 6 years old and over last year we have had a continuing bad smell in one bathroom , its on ground floor but the kitchen and other bathroom are not affected ,  They are not on same Cesspit tank.

 

We have checked the U bend S bends toilet seal and shower trap all are good no pipes are blocked, chemical have been applied  and cesstank emptied and inspected it seems OK  .

 

Its getting worse and its dangerous , methane and drain smells make our master bedroom unusable  and potential for explosion and health issues now high.

 

Im running out of ideas ,,, any suggestions or a good reference for a company to call in ???  area is bang sarey  /pattaya

Assuming it's in the house and not from outside, are you able to see if sewer pipes not broken and leaking ?

Is there a toilet too in this room? I had this problem and it came from the toilet. Since I put there a wax ring as seal no problems anymore.

Sorry, meant to say vinegar. I was joking about a gallon. Mix a few tablespoons of baking soda with a cup or two of hot water (add white vinegar for a bit more punch).

When you say you have checked all 'S' bends connected to toilets shower outlet and sinks,  do any of them leak out leaving the pipe to the Cess pit open to internal bathroom space.

Don't take much.!!!

Yes same problem.  This is called a Thai toilet.

It sounds like the seal (or wax ring) to the floor flange for the toilet is either missing or perhaps broken or misaligned.

 

A lot of Thai "handymen" neglect to install the seal when fitting a toilet, relying instead on the grout ring around the base of the toilet to prevent sewer gases from escaping (which it doesn't).

 

Does your toilet wobble a bit?

 

For the sake of a bit of new grout, I'd be tempted to break the old grout, and undo the tie-down bolts to move the toilet away from the floor to check the seal.

Don't forget to disconnect the water hose and flush the toilet so the cistern is empty before you do though.

 

 

A new seal (or wax ring) and tie-down bolts and washers will cost you about 200 baht.

 

A full kit comprising new floor flange, tie-down bolts and washers, and seal (or wax ring) will set you back about 700 baht.

 

They will be available at HomePro just up the road from you towards Pattaya on the Nong Nooch side of Sukhumvit.

Correctly functioning septic tanks almost never need emptying and if you ever pump them out you should immediately fill them with water so they don’t float.

White cement seal of toilet base does stop gas and no bolts or wax seal are used in normal toilet install in Thailand.  But often there is no toilet vent installed so flush is not complete (water does not clear all to below toilet bend).  Also air vents can sometimes become clogged even when installed.  Septic tanks and toilets should each have vents.

You need proper venting is the only real way to solve the problem.

Thanks guys OK problem solved  taking the trhais completely out of the loop  I dismantled the toilet and lifted it off the base and it was obvious that the wax ring was broken , now This has ''supposedly'' been replaced Twice  but I can clearly see that It has Not been done  at all .  I did it again myself with a wax ring from Boonthavrn in Bang sarey and silicone around ceramic base  and 2 new stainless bolts  and  now the problem is solved .. Bloody Thai ripoff bodgers ,,,

Sorry have only just seen this topic…we had exactly the same problem, developed after several years…Thai plumbers tend to chuck the wax seal away. Took me over one hour to chip away the cement between the toilet and base.

 

I bough the full sealing kit from the toilet manufacture ….somewhere on this forum is the topic on the hassle that I had…maybe 3-4 years ago now.

I told you this above already. The Thais don't seem to like wax rings. I sent them too to buy one after they had installed the toilet already without one. And then I watched them when they installed it. They didn't like this...

The last guy we had to repair ours chipped away and cracked the toilet itself, so it was off to Global for a new toilet as well.

In the bathroom probably. 

Have a look around the floor, there may be another drain somewhere to allow accidental water overflow to have an escape route. 

These are generally inadequate as regards water traps.
