Thai immigration arrest foreign language teacher - she's blacklisted from Thailand for 5 years

Siam Rath reported with their standard rhetoric in support of Thailand's immigration policies especially in regard to illegal activity of foreigners.

 

Acting according to the policies of the chief of the IB, Pathum Thani immigration north of the Thai capital Bangkok detained a 40 year old Ugandan who was given the assumed name of "Oo", as is her right.

 

She had come to Thailand to visit family members who were teachers of language and according to the media's headline joined in with that activity.

 

But Oo did not bother extending her visa.

 

The result is that she will be blacklisted from entering Thailand for five years according to the rules.

Just out of curiosity what language was she

teaching ? my guess is English not Swahili, should pay her to stay, going by the way  English teachers here are mostly useless.

A few years back around where I live they only employed people from The Cameroon as English teachers.

There's a Cameroonian teacher near here that I chat with from time to time if we bump into each other.

 

I cannot understand a word she says. 

 

She grew up in Liverpool.

It's a whole racket that's been going on for years now. I personally knew of 5 Africans that were paid 18,000 baht a month but each of their work contracts with the schools were for 28,000 baht a month.

Because I don't think that poster lived in the Cameroon at that time, so it seems selective to only employ Cameroon citizens... go look for an argument elsewhere!

My personal observation is Thai English teachers have a remarkable understanding of English grammar - much better than most native speakers. Their spoken, unfortunately, is not good at all.

There are 500 languages  spoken in Nigeria and Swahili is not one of them .

There are about 211 million people in/from Nigeria and she's not one of them.

In Asia an English "Teacher" can come from anywhere.  A few years ago I had a conversation with a Russian woman who was teaching English at private school in Seoul, South Korea.  She had an accent that was very noticeable but her grammar was excellent. Also, she was blonde, mid 30's and very attractive. I also saw a guy from somewhere in Eastern Europe who wos teaching English to kids at a Hagwon(a prep academy).  This guy had no business teaching anything.  His only qualification that I noticed was that he was married to a Korean woman. 

 

So an English "Teacher" from Uganda in LOS does not seem far fetched to me.

The term “blacklisted” will have to change soon.

It could only be offensive to the fragile egos and easily hurt feelings of the Global Majority.

I have no doubt the lady is from Nigeria and if so I am pretty sure she does not speak Swahili .

She is from Uganda. Nigeria is Westafrica.

Cameroon has 260 national languages spoken by an estimated 25 million people in the 10 regions of the country.

It is, but English is another official language of Cameroon. This originated from the aftermath of the First World War. Cameroon had been an Imperial German colony, that was split between France and Britain. Upon independence in 1960, the two parts reunified for form Cameroon as we know it, but they kept their respective administrative languages.

It used to be said that the qualifications for teaching English in Asia were "a white face and a white shirt".

Keeping the nation safe by preventing the youth from learning proper English. This is real progress and wisdom in action. Depend upon Prayuth for that.

Cameroon was colonially part French and part British, I worked there for a while (It's sandwiched between ex French & British colonies, a bit like Thailand!????).
