IMHO you think Pattaya is a rip-off until you come to Phuket. Then you realize it can be worse, a lot worse.

Disclosure: I didn't visit Phuket since a long time. But I would be surprised if it got better.

Everything is better on the west coast, except beer and food prices! 

 

Looking for best value holiday, and not worried about spending 1500,- 3000,- usd more on a 3 week holiday, you go to the west coast and not necessary Phuket! 

 

Looking for cheapest holiday Pattaya, but the beaches and water is not even fear im comparison. Beaches on Koh Lan is ok.

It all depends what your looking for, I have been to both, and for me, I like Patong in Phuket as it's smaller and with everything within walking distance of your hotel if you plan it well.

 

I also like heading out to Kata, and Nai Harn Beaches for the day etc.

 

But as with everything in touristy parts of Thailand, look out for the rip offs, prices vary muchly, but if you do your homework and book things in advance off sites, you should be fine.

Went to both in the 90's and reluctantly to Pattaya again for the day in 2009 and 2011 for concerts. They are both ghastly, but at least Phuket is not just an open air brothel for sex tourists and assorted perverts and weirdos. If you must choose one go for the island, Pattaya is a national disgrace, in my opinion.

A few years ago I asked a bar manager from Pattaya why she moved to Phuket - "Because it's beautiful".

 

A few weeks ago I asked a Pattaya go-go girl why she came to Phuket to FL - "Because the customers treat me better".

 

I've never been to Pattaya and never will - it just doesn't tempt me. Having said that, I have never been to Bangkok apart from as a transit passenger for the same reason.

One has to wonder what type of odd upbringing makes you so offended by beautiful women and sex?

Yes, that's true, and no,  it isn't: Pattaya is the most honest place in this country,  it's the real Thailand and the low-lives (Thai and foreign) there are brutally straightforward.

Phuket is a lot more fake, the people there (Thais and foreign) are in no way better. It's way more of a rip-off, a national disgrace.

Phuket.  Better scenery,  beaches, islands, Patong Beach. .  On the downside the rainy season lasts  a lot longer there and it is waaaaay more expensive than Pattaya

Reminds me of a time I was on vacation and sitting on a beach in Florida just staring out at the ocean. Just staring straight ahead. A woman stepped into my view wearing a G-string bikini with the most incredible backside you can imagine. Then another woman in a G-string joined her. An incredible sight until a 3rd joined them who had a fat hairy butt. I looked up and it was a guy. Yes, wearing a G-string as well. Ruined the entire experience.

Pattaya is cheaper, Phuket can be pricey.

 

Phuket has nicer beaches and the sea is cleaner.

 

Phuket is visually more attractive.

 

Good choice of international, ethnic and local restaurants at both locations, cheaper  in Pattaya.

 

Shopping - there are more, bigger, newer shopping malls in Pattaya.

 

Phuket attracts a higher/different class of tourist, there's still quite a few mongers/bar beer tourists in Pattaya. Beach Road in the evening is not that different from the Mos Eisley Cantina in Star Wars.

 

Phuket has easy access to Koh Phi Phi, Phagna, Krabi and other holiday locations with nice beaches, eg Railay. Pattaya has Koh Chang and Koh Samet to the East but the deep sea port of Laem Chabang and the industrial zone is a barrier to the West.

 

Onwards travel - Phuket is quite remote, getting there means flying from Bangkok or taking an almost 12 hour drive. Pattaya has excellent eight lane road infrastructure into Bangkok which is  under 2 hours, less to the international airport.

 

Bottom line - it's mostly a cost issue.

Sure Phuket has beautiful beaches, but get real folks, what percentage of expats actually go to the beach all that often once they live there?

So many advantages to Pattaya already mentioned here.

Easy access to Bangkok often the top tourist destination on the planet.

For a vacation for new to Thailand types, arguably Phuket is better.

But again for expats, there really isn't a contest and it is NOT only about cost.

You're right, as an expat in Phuket for many years we didn't go to the beach that often but we did like to see the water and the coastline frequently. Gazing out into the bay and seeing the contrast of a green headland against blue sea and fluffy white clouds is very soothing, I find. For that reason, part of the appeal of both locations has to involve visual beauty. To be honest, if that was my sole criteria I'd have to say that Pattaya bay resembles more of a JC Penney parking lot on a Saturday afternoon but hey, lots of people like boats.

Speaking of an unruly Russian, one in his ever popular speedos, no shirt, was in the cooking area at a market standing over a bbq flipping shrimp, fish, chicken etc. I assume it was his own order, the locals working there did not remove him so I loudly asked him twice if he had a work visa he looked up and smirked and continued with his bbq. Come on Thai's don't put up with that BS...........
