January 8, 20233 yr Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva says perpetrators will be found and punished after supporters of Brazilian far-right ex-President Jair Bolsonaro stormed Congress. The dramatic scenes come a week after the left-wing veteran's inauguration. Supporters of Mr Bolsonaro - who refuses to accept that he lost the election - also stormed the Supreme Court and surrounded the presidential palace. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-64204860

January 9, 20233 yr Many years ago wasn't it the Boris Yeltsin who bombed the Russian parliament? And wasn't he applauded by international community for that?

January 9, 20233 yr Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) called on the Biden administration and local authorities in Florida on Sunday to send back to Brazil its former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, whose supporters stormed the country’s Congress and Supreme Court. “[Bolsonaro] should be extradited to Brazil,” Castro said to CNN’s Jim Acosta. “In fact, it was reported that he was under investigation for corruption and fled Brazil to the United States. He’s a dangerous man, they should send him back to his home country, Brazil” https://thehill.com/policy/international/3804829-texas-democrat-calls-for-us-authorities-to-extradite-bolsonaro-back-to-brazil/
January 9, 20233 yr Popular Post I guess now we know why Bolsonaro went to Florida. The storming of government buildings on Sunday in Brasilia drew immediate parallels to the Jan. 6, 2021, attacks on the U.S. Capitol — almost exactly two years ago. Supporters of Bolsonaro have protested against Lula’s electoral win since last year; government forces retook the buildings from them Sunday evening. “Domestic terrorists and fascists cannot be allowed to use Trump’s playbook to undermine democracy,” Castro tweeted. https://www.politico.com/news/2023/01/08/biden-administration-condemns-crowd-that-stormed-buildings-in-brazils-capital-00076937
January 9, 20233 yr Brazil's top court removes Brasilia governor over pro-Bolsonaro riots BRASILIA, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Brazil Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes decided late on Sunday to remove Brasilia Governor Ibaneis Rocha for 90 days alleging security flaws that allowed the invasion of government buildings by supporters of far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro. Moraes also ruled that camps outside military bases set up by coup-mongering Bolsonaro supporters should be lifted within 24 hours and that roads and buildings should be unblocked. https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/brazils-top-court-removes-brasilia-governor-over-pro-bolsonaro-riots-2023-01-09/

January 9, 20233 yr This is so damaging to US global image as sponsor of domestic and foreign terrorist acts by these 2 anti-globalists firebrands. I hope Brazil has the same extraterritorial jurisdiction like in US to charge foreigners for conspiracy and inciting a coup. The world will be a better place without these 2 evil men.
January 9, 20233 yr Sound familiar? The occupation of the government buildings had been planned for at least two weeks by Bolsonaro's supporters in groups on social media messaging platforms such as Telegram and Twitter, yet there was no move by security forces to prevent the attack, called by one group "the seizure of power by the people." https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/brazil-investigates-who-led-anti-democratic-riots-capital-2023-01-09/

January 9, 20233 yr And meanwhile, the chief culprit is behaving like the two bit coward he really is, and hiding out in Florida. It is he who should be pursued. Who does he think he is, Donald?
January 9, 20233 yr They stormed the capitol on a Sunday. Huh? Brazil is very much a Catholic/Christian country, though their elections are held on Sundays. Brazil does not have an extradition treaty with the US. The best thing the US can do right now is deport Bolso: the US backed a military junta there for decades, and a lot of the people, even the younger generations, still see the US as an adversary. The deportation would greatly bolster the US's image with the populace.

January 10, 20233 yr Everyone saw Brazil violence coming. January 10, 20233 yr ‘No amnesty!’: Brazilian protests demand jail for rioters Protesters’ push for accountability evokes memories of an amnesty law that for decades has protected military members accused of abuse and murder during the country’s 1964-85 dictatorship. A 2014 truth commission report sparked debate over how Brazil has grappled with the regime’s legacy. Declining to mete out punishment “can avoid tensions at the moment, but perpetuates instability,” Luis Felipe Miguel, a professor of political science at the University of Brasilia, wrote in a column entitled “No Amnesty” published Monday evening. https://apnews.com/article/jair-bolsonaro-politics-brazil-government-democracy-b62784248fee194c650df5c1da0fd120?utm_source=homepage&utm_medium=TopNews&utm_campaign=position_02
