Sweden grants permission to burn the KORAN outside Turkish embassy - as Erdogan continues to block country's NATO bid

Right-wing Quran burning in Sweden enrages Turkey and throws a new wrench in Nordics’ NATO bid

It’s now been eight months since Sweden and Finland declared their intent to join NATO, a move that upended the countries’ longstanding policies of nonalignment following nearby Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

While most of the organization’s members want to fast-track the new joiners’ memberships, tensions and a fresh spat between Sweden and Turkey threaten to extend that waiting time — perhaps indefinitely.

All 30 of NATO’s current states need to approve a new member.

Seems like an immature provocation to me. Not just of Turkey and Muslims in general, rather burning books has a historic symbolism in the darkest episode of modern European history.

It is to bad that one single country can prevent another country become a nato member. Its just a way for erdogan to be more important that he deserves. Kick him out...

  • Agree, I don't have any dog in this fight, nor do I follow any religious doctrine, but to upset so many people, many of them without any ties to Turkey is simply a stupid move.

Perhaps it is close to the time that the approval for  country to join NATO be changed from all the members to a majority of perhaps 90 or 95%?

Seems like an immature person to be so empty and hollow to worry about a book being burnt.

These immature people have no real value, worth, or effectiveness

I suspect he's the holdout blocking Germany from giving permission to give the Ukrainians tanks. Germany has stated they want unanimous agreement first.

The Germans have been much slower moving significant military hardware than other contributors.

The book and effigy burning does not help anything.

During sensitive time Sweden should be smart like Finland;

"WARSAW/STOCKHOLM

Police in Finland said the public burning of Islam’s holy book the Quran would not be allowed in the country, local media reported Monday.

The National Police Board said that burning a copy of the Quran would likely violate religious peace, which is a punishable offence in Finland, said media reports, citing the Finnish News Agency STT.

The public burning or other desecration of a book held sacred by a religious community would be met with police intervention, added the police.

In response to a question from Anadolu on whether they would adopt a similar approach, the Swedish Foreign Ministry reiterated its position on burning a copy of the Quran in the name of freedom of expression."

Above from Turkish news.

Finland got in - Sweden not. They prefer "freedom of expression" outside NATO....

Pretty stupid.
