webfact Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 Picture: INN INN reported from the Khao San Road and neighboring Soi Rambutree last night when Region 1 immigration police conducted a sting. They had received complaints from Thais about illegal migrants taking Thai jobs. They were selling roti and kebabs - jobs reserved for Thai people only. Immigration held a meeting and formulated a plan - they intended to go in pretending to be tourists. In Soi Rambutree they announced they were from immigration and showed their badges. Eleven people from Myanmar were arrested without passports or work permits. Many migrants fled the scene abandoning their stalls. The media said Article 8 of a 2017 law amended in 2018 forbids the selling of roti, kebabs and other items. Those arrested said they were taking in 1,000 to 1,500 baht a day before overheads were deducted. They were selling to Thais and foreign tourists. This activity was causing considerable trouble to Thais in the area who were legally selling their wares. The migrants were all charged with illegal entry and illegal work and taken away. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2023-02-09 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Popular Post ThailandRyan Posted February 9, 2023 Popular Post Posted February 9, 2023 Seems that all jobs here in Thailand are Jobs only a Thai can do, from cutting hair to selling Kebabs. Seems that the Thai's want to keep the other asean countries people stomped completely beneath there feet........this is ridiculous......only jobs a Thai can do, and just how many Thais will do these jobs.....very few. Next it will be foreigners can only hire Thai's to be housekeepers, yet Thai's can hire those from cambodia, myanmar, and laos.... 2 3

I've never seen or heard of a farang arrested and deported for workign on their private (residential) property. That is not what the law intends. It intends stopping people working on other people's properties, hence taking away work from Thais who would normally be paid to do that work. 1 1

Long ago was the exact story: police arrested foreigner for fixing a fence at his house. Police claimed he should assign this task to local. 1

billd766 Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 I could understand it, if there were hundreds of Thais waiting to step into those jobs. But there are not. What has happened is that hundreds of people who bought the food daily now cannot, hundreds of people who were willing to supply that food and work hard to do it, and who gains from it all? Nobody. To quote Charles Dickens who wrote Oliver Twist in 1838, https://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/the-law-is-an-ass.html When Mr. Bumble, the unhappy spouse of a domineering wife, is told in court that "...the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction", replies: "If the law supposes that," said Mr. Bumble, squeezing his hat emphatically in both hands, "the law is a ass - a idiot". 1
ThailandRyan Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 So selling yourself on a street corner if not Thai is allowed as an occupation or is that found under the Street Vending that only a Thai can do.....asking for a monger friend. 1

NativeBob Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 The eternal question "What qualifies as the job in Thailand?" And the most popular mistake farangs do: to lecture policeman about the subject. Been there done that ) PS: buy roti and kebobs at KSR? Yuck! Don't forget that many of those workers are Cambodian as well. Many have more money than many Thais as they know how to save and not spend what they make as fast as they obtain it....... 1 1
