If you've never been asked "Whair'r ye fai'?" this might seem like a strange question, but where are you from?

Most of us are born in a place, and many of us grow up somewhere - maybe not the same place - and we may have passports from one or other countries, and we may or may not live somewhere, but "Whair'r ye fae'?"

I generally tell people I'm Scottish, but I lived there for less than half my life so far, and neither the start, and maybe not the end.

So whence art thou?  I an't expect you to answer for others

 

Bangkok, lower Sukhumvit, is the location where I lived longest. And in a few years Thailand will be the country where I lived more than half of my life. I still like it and probably I won't ever return "home". 

Longest residence was in Brighton, 24 years,

Second longest residence was Chiang Mai, 14 years.

10 years each in Dorking, Oxford, Bodmin.

I'd say Prachuap now, as this IS HOME, for now, with no desire to change.   Can't say that about any other place I lived, knowing I wasn't going to stay.

 

USA 45 yrs ... TH 23 yrs, 1/3 of my life and almost half my adult life in TH.

 

Udon Thani, 3 different residences, 2 built, 1 rental, staying not by choice, as couldn't leave until daughter done High School.  Left promptly, as did she, and none of us want to return.

 

USA, 6 different states, ~15 different residences (owned 3), moved every few years after leaving parents house (suburbia Philly, PA, USA) @ 20 yrs old.  Actually bought that house 8 yrs later, and 2 others in PA, for investment only.

 

I followed the money, employment opportunities (3 different states with 1 company, 2 states with 2 other companies) with no allegiance to anywhere.  Not having kids made it easy.

'Haven't actually lived in New York City since 1997. But I still identify as a New Yorker.

 

It is the stain that will not wash.

 

If I were from some nowheresville, I'd just say, "the states".
