No, it has changed quite recently and Timatic (the system the airlines use to check) now says: So yes you need a ticket, but no it can be outside your alloted (visa waiver) time. This differs from all the advice on here (and elsewhere) and which I have adhered to for years, but anyone is free to check it out. For clarity I checked it using UK passport details.
