Social Media
Uganda's parliament has passed a bill which would criminalise people who identify as gay, or a sexual minority. Individuals could face lengthy prison terms if the bill is signed into law by President Yoweri Museveni. Under the proposed legislation, friends, family and members of the community would have a duty to report individuals in same-sex relationships to the authorities. Homosexual acts are already illegal in the east African country. But the bill seeks to go further and criminalise people on the basis of their sexual identity. The bill, which was first tabled earlier this month, passed with widespread support in Uganda's parliament on Tuesday.

Popular Post RuamRudy
I hope all foreign government aid donors are reconsidering their support for Uganda in light of this. It is a pity that ordinary Ugandans will suffer if this happens, but all levers should be pulled to put pressure on the Ugandan government to block this bill.

And what about the other 81 countries who also outlaw homosexuality? 2

The BBC suggest that the number is lower, and some of those are taking steps to decriminalise homosexuality. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-43822234.amp How many of those are recipients of foreign aid? I can't say, can you? However, human rights should be a fundamental basis for all overseas aid considerations. 1

Looking at that excellent map in the sub link the strictest places are mostly grouped adjacent and mostly in the same two main regions of the world: https://ilga.org/ilga-world-releases-state-sponsored-homophobia-December-2020-update By that map, I would not factor in British (or any other) colonial influence too much but rather examine the most popular religions in those regions. I suppose just stating the bleedin' obvious is far too politically incorrect and taboo so just blame the British then. Good old Auntie Beeb. Popular Post thaibeachlovers
Hopefully some posters will now divert their opprobrium from western countries that permit homosexuality ( and even protect it in law ) to those countries that are violently opposed to it. 2 2 1 1

I look forward to your response when Ugandans arrive in the west seeking asylum on the basis of being persecuted for their sexual orientation in Uganda. 5

I don't think it was much of a priority to them. Popular Post Bkk Brian
Deplorable bill. UN and US join chorus of condemnation against Uganda’s hardline anti-LGBT bill The United Nations and United States on Wednesday added to international outrage over a hardline bill passed by Ugandan lawmakers that criminalizes simply identifying as LGBTQ+, prescribes a life sentence for convicted homosexuals and a death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality.” “The passing of this discriminatory bill – probably among the worst of its kind in the world – is a deeply troubling development,” said a statement from Türk’s office. https://edition.cnn.com/2023/03/22/africa/uganda-lgbtq-bill-condemned-intl/index.html

I wonder what triggers that in them? The topic is about a country that has made something illegal which is also illegal in many other countries that all have something in common (Islam). Why would that be out of scope for this topic other than the fact it's an uncomfortable truth the left doesn't want to acknowledge? The only reason this particular instance has generated some outrage is that it is *not* a majority muslim country so Uganda is not privy to the bigotry of low expectations that would give them a free pass on this. 3 2

To be clear, I do not support the legislation, nor am I excusing it, but it is what it is.

Jingthing
Not only about behaviors! It's about behaviors AND Identity AND not reporting people that you know with the criminalized identity. In some ways much worse than many Muslim countries.
