Bungee jump given clean bill of health after Hong Kong tourist "damaged Thai tourism" by going to foreign media

Featured Replies

I want to do a bungee jump but never in Thailand, and no extreme sports when it's people here you are relying on, too irresponsible and careless.

The tourist did nothing to harm Thai tourism. His revelations about the lack of maintenance is what hurt tourism. Let's get our facts straight, and be man enough to stop deflecting blame.

  • RTP do it on a daily basis.  Soi dogs; unchecked pollution; scamming taxi drivers; it's a wonder any tourists come here.

the Hong Kong tourist who went to the media in his homeland after a bungee cord broke in Pattaya had damaged Thai tourism.

Let's blame the victim for telling what happened. Yes, he "might" have died but that's no reason to tell everyone.

They were told that there were two tourists. The first had jumped safely but the second one's cord snapped 2-3 meters above the water.

so it's safe - OMG

A case of victim blaming.

The broken bungee cord damaged Thai Tourism. Not the person who survived it and told media.

What is the problem?Nobody died yet and we have a "safety first" sticker

I just wonder if there are any government set guidelines and not just a few cowboys just winging it.

"Too old equipment should be replaced",yes but what is too old?

"It was decided that the cord had broken perhaps due to wear that could not be ascertained with the naked eye."

If damage and deterioration can not  be seen with the naked how will it be possible to make a safety inspection?

Oh and the way they treat you here (except for the times you're spending cash) hasn't helped it at all.

Snitch tried to rort 200,000 from them after falling 3 meteres into water.

Which resulted in zero damage to him.

Blackban him.

Everyone expects to be compensated for every little thing these days.

Harden up.

Wasnt even that high. I would jump off that platform without a girly rope.

i am surprised the bungee jumper wasn't blamed sued and deported.

Although I do get your sarcasm and love it, if he had reported the accident it to the media whilst he was in Thailand that's probably what would have happened and banned for 5 years?????

Having read 3 different articles in maybe 2-3 days about this, what stuck in my mind was the length of the cord snapping, it went from halfway to 5m above and now to 2-3m...

Can't wait for the next report: 30cm...

It's a bit like a cars cambelt, you change it before it snaps.......

it was all his fault if he hadn't been in LOS it wouldn't have happened,

he should pay for the damage he caused

Now how in the world did they decide that? What kind of inspection of a failed bungee strap shows that it failed because of "wear that was not to be ascertained with the naked eye"? And if they were actually correct, then the proper course of action would be to take measures to insure that bungee straps are replaced every so often, whether or not they showed signs of visible damage.

Yesterday representatives from the Chonburi tourism office, civil engineers and the Pattaya tourist police finally went to investigate.

One month after the accident, they really do care about safety.

I am really hoping the same guys do not check aircraft?????

Joking aside, if the bungee cord broke there must have been a problem? or am I missing something?

Nice to know that everything is safe, when you cannot see it's worn out – I presume that's why components in an airplane needs to be replaced due to age and not due to visual wear-out – perhaps a bungy jump wire should be replaced by same parameter...:whistling:

Must be the lure of the temples and a Phad Thai supper.

"It was decided that the cord had broken perhaps due to wear that could not be ascertained with the naked eye. "... I wonder if they also apply this philosophy to the aviation sector.. ???.... be good to know...

When it breaks or snaps.

The bungee cord should be tested every day, by letting the owners of the attraction jump first.

You should just watch the vid and decide. Pretty easy.

Of course.

You seem to be stupid enough to try jumping without the bungee cord

You can do a search of the internet and find many rules and regulations on inspection of the bungee cords.

However, I could not find one for Thailand.

A bungee rope breaking is not a 'little thing'. And if the company had compensated more than just medical expenses and a refund of the fee, they would have avoided the exposure. You might jump off the platform without a 'girly rope', but I and many others sure as hell wouldn't.
