Six elderly Thais were killed in a collision with a soldier’s pickup truck in Buriram province, northeast Thailand, this morning. The soldier – the only person to survive the crash – was carrying 257 sleeves of illegal cigarettes which he attempted to hide in the woods nearby.

 

Six elderly Thais dressed in traditional outfits were on their way to set up a shrine in a Toyota pickup truck with a Khon Kaen registration when they collided with an Isuzu D-Max pickup truck driven by 29 year old Sgt. Peerapong, a soldier under Suranaree Camp in Korat, along the Chokhai – Detch Udom Highway 24.

 

Four elderly women and one elderly man died at the scene and the sixth victim, an elderly man, was seriously injured and later passed away at the hospital.

 

The deceased include 83 year old Lamai Ruangmanee, 76 year old Thongarb Chuangchai, 56 year old Uthuan Suriyayen, 56 year old Bonting Kulnara, 67 year old Uthai Losuwan, and 52 year old Chong Khaopow.

If he lost control and crashed , I would say it was a safe bet that you crashed into the Toyota.

cigarettes are bad for your health  ????, 6 Thais dead , maybe if he had

not been smuggling them ,he would have driven more carefully.

The  Thai death holiday season is off to a cracking start. The soldier should be locked up for life - to me the story reads he was more concerned with hiding the ciggies than the injured and dying

6 dead in Buriram. 37 in Bua Lamphu last year. 6 in Surat Thani a few days ago. 2 policemen and an NCO implicated. 49 dead. Disturbing insanity from those supposed to protect the public. Maybe many more.

The cigarettes were probably for his personal use all just a misunderstanding TIT

what a sad and depressing story - how does the commanding officer respond? 257 sleeves x 200 = 51400 cigs .Fine is approx .... ?baht per cigarette..(double if you are in uniform).Total this amount and give to each families relatives - make every barracks pay something, as an example to other barracks.

Six people in the pickup suggests that some were sitting in the bed of the vehicle. It's against the law because there are possible consequences, but in Thailand nobody cares about anything. No personal responsibility, no law enforcement. And so people die.

 

As for the soldier, just another corrupt Thai in uniform. Nothing unusual about that.

My condolences...six people in one accident...tragic. The ladies that were their late 50's...I wouldn't call that 'old'.

Seems to have been more concerned with hiding the cigarette than with killing six people. I guess the Thai army kills Thai people more than external enemies and doesn't think it is a big deal.

Was there a ban on travelling in the back of a pick-up a few years ago but then rescinded . It is a way of life up here in Issan especially with the farmers and poorer folk who travel around in  unroadworthy old pickups . Plus of course the under aged motor cyclists and non helmet wearers , the complete disregard and ignorance of the road user laws because as you say there is no enforcement only spot checks for tea money . Ironically I was stopped by a bib because he said my lady was not wearing a seatbelt and at the same time there were a few pickups going past , all with passengers in the back . He was not concerned .

It's all about the haves & have nots and to serve the money people and keep down those without , thus low education and high annual death rate on the Thai roads . No effort to make changes to improve fatality rates . Collateral damage ?

Correct. The people demanded the right to play Russian Roulette with their lives. But I think the ban was reinstated. Difficult to remember all the U-turns. Meanwhile, parents, schools, police don't care whether kids and others die or not. No common sense, no brain - and no future for some.

But, as the PM once said when a young tourist was murdered, the parents can just make another one.

Prayut himself would certainly be axed and sent to prison to begin with. If someone wanted to set a real example, that would be the place to start. Never going to happen, though.
