All explained in the full OP.

There is more than likely more to this than the story in the Op/Link. That is what posters on here are suggesting.

Probably been brewing for a long time. The wife of the injured man likely more involved too.

this kind of thing is an all too common occurrence here sadly, especially in the tourist hot spots.   many local thais about who detest farang.

It would be highly unusual for a group of Thai people to attack a foreigner. Extremely unusual. Might there be something else going on here? Some bad blood?    It does help to be courteous a

Even if he did, it's still not OK for a gang of people to attack someone.   Quite sad that this is all it takes for a literal mob of people to almost kill someone.

Well, both sides are clearly in the wrong, lying, and behaved it a very inappropriate way.

If the shop owner had a serious problem with the guy she should have called the police.

The people that were involved in attacking the guy should be charged.

It's not OK for a gang of people to physically attack and cause serious injuries to someone simply because they were upset by insults and 10 baht.

So does anyone believe that the Thais will pay the hospital bill in full?

I don't see that happening... They were ‘protecting the virtue of Thailand’... besides, the guy got smashed up after falling on the floor !!! :whistling:

 ????

In general, Thai people don't like what perceived by them as a loud attitude/behaviour and or staring at them in a confrontational manner, there were times back than when foreigners were sort of revered and respected, no longer and not anymore, now most foreigners are looked at as just some people that they have to put up with, sign of time it is.

been that way for a long time, as long as you empty your wallet often they will tolerate you - they expect foreigners to spend and even pay extra for things, best policy is I have found is make sure you are clear about the price of something before making a purchace especilly in establishments that don't have it displayed - they will make it up on the fly

They literally expect you to pay whatever they ask and when you ask for the price you are insulting them and taking the conversation down a direction they don't want to go (face saving terratory) especially if they are intending to rip you off, of course this doesn't happen in supermarkets 7/11 etc were prices are clearly displayed but think of the many places foreigners go in Thailand were prices are not displayed - mom&pop stores being one of them - bars/entertainment venues are other good examples - a falang asking a price of something is treated as an insult not a right especially if by design (not in all cases) their intention is to rip you off

So how many on here immediately blamed the Thai without being bothered to read the complete story in the OP link?

It would certainly appear that this wasn't the Fin first encounter with this shop owner in a negative way....coming back and demanding cheaper beer price and then telling her F you etc is generally not going to end well for anyone.

It's not rocket science whether in Thailand or anywhere else that if you repeatedly insult a shop owner that sooner or later somebody is gonna kick your butt....he was lucky he wasn't in USA or they would most likely  have shot him.

"she suggested that Jarae’s loud speaking might have been misinterpreted as anger directed towards them." Geez, thank goodness I am soft spoken. LOL

I find a few home truths often anger local Thais especially when they kill each other by burning trash and go around poisoning the local dogs. I don't hold back in my anger as such events but more than aware they hunt in packs so carry a weapon of some sort with me. But in the main most are polite and don't do the above but losing that public face can get you in trouble. Unkindness to animals is my one trigger. But their are many who are not so keep that sword sheathed until absolutely necessary.

I agree. There is no reason not be polite in such situations. He could shop somewhere else.

He got beat up trying to save 10 baht.

Could it be that Jarae was being rude and abusive to the shop owner and the shop owner hit him ?

Yes, exactly.

There are some people who find a beating no matter where they go.

Jarae might just be one of those people.

Farang flings an insult, and they fly off the handle.

Pity they can't use some of that energy for when their children and grandchildren insult them by being disobedient, lazy oafs, and of course, when their govt insults them every day.

Oh, I too had to do a Songkran beer run. As I had bought the first case of Leo, which of course soon ran out, father-in-law's visiting sis produced a crispy 1000 from her purse, talked to one of the kids, and another case soon appeared. Amazing Thailand!

Or bottles. Strange they do not mention this vibrant cultural trait in the tourist adverts.

I recall a German being bottled to death by some friendly locals he was drinking with for "insulting Thailand". No proof or statements about what he said or did, just the word of the killers. According to westerners in the area, no fines or jail time was given for this 'patriotic' act of violence.

That is what they do in your country too? A primitive, violent land of lager louts ready to bottle.

Yes, in my Country, you can get killed for looking at someone the wrong way or looking at them for too long

Good thing regular Thais don't read this forum.  If they did, more members here would be getting tuned-up like that Finn.

How many read the link? Says he only wanted to pay 60 baht not 70 baht for beer then abused the woman. So he saved 10 baht and got bashed up. He must be stupid and desperate to act like this.

“Thailand buffalo” and “Thailand F- you” sounds a lot like how a Thai person might make an insult in English. I don’t know Finnish so maybe he didn’t speak English well either and Finnish grammar is like that?

In the many years I've lived here I've always been pleasant to locals who live around me and talk caudally,  at the local markets and shops I always talk with a smile and always receive the same back.

I've never been attacked or anything even near that.

So with some of the logic of the pussy farangs he had it coming because he upset them ,well now they’ve upset him so he should be able to pay back each of them when he feels offended.  Thais in a pack when alcohol is present is like rabid dogs , attack attack attack

Thais are not nice anymore.
im living here and everywhere I look I see violence against farang, thefts and more. Thailand is a dangerous country for tourist and expat’s to live those days.
every Thai want a bit off you, your money is not safe here, same your life…

If you believe the Thai shopkeeper. Obviously no Thai would ever lie to try and keep out of jail.

5~10 years in jail for each member of the gang would seem appropriate IMHO.

It literally changes how you behave, a way that you would not behave if you had not consumed the alcohol.

How could that possibly be your true nature?

SUB-conscious mind.

Repressed in normal waking life.

The neighbours admitted to attacking the foreign man but insisted that they did so because he insulted (...) the Thai people first.

A Thai recently said he didn't like my country. Should I have beaten him up? (After all, I'd like to fit in...)

Shows again how the small ruling class, through indoctrination and lack of education keeps people's minds in the early 20th century and well before.

So he got beat up for nothing by a shopkeeper? Is this your theory?
