Sales of Alcoholic Beverages During Songkran Soar by 30%

National — Thailand has seen a 30% surge in booze sales during the recent Songkran festival in contrast to a declined number of drunk traffic accidents nationally during the festival year over year, according to Thanakorn Kuptachit, an advisor to the Thai Alcohol Business Association.

Other related businesses such as restaurants, entertainment venues, hotels, and event organizers also benefited from the festivity.

 

Thanakorn said it was notable that this year’s accident statistics during Songkran saw lower cases of drink-related accidents compared to last year, as people were more careful while travelling and took responsibility by not drinking before driving despite the fact that this was the first full-on Songkran in four years.

So THai logical thinking, now we can drink more as there were less accidents..... Western thinking, the numbers of accidents are not correct as there were less than average... Thai people are irresponsible about alcohol and driving as the police doesn't enforce the laws and judges doesn't punish with high fines

And followed by election day on May 14 with no alcohol followed by dry Buddhist days in June and the 1st of August. Swings and roundabouts.

It can be shock for tourists that don't know though.

Not all drunk driving is reported , when a cop ran in the back of my friend he took him to a garage to have vehicle repaired he said if he reported it he would not pay and fight him for claim , knowing TIT he got vehicle fixed

Actually, Western thinking is "let me come here and take advantage of low prices from the exploitative labor market, then turn around and complain that their society doesn't put more effort into fair social practices while insulting every native Thai along the way."  Thai thinking is "let me get what I can from these invaders from the Empire, as long as they are raping my country."

UP 30% compared to what ? Pre-covid , or during covid ? Anything can be up 30% if based on the passed two years !
