COVID-19 infections in Thailand between 23rd and 29th of April increased to 1,811, or an average of 258 cases a day, and ten deaths, according to the Department of Disease Control.

So far this year, 8,382 people have been infected and treated at hospitals. Of these, 288 have died, 157 suffered lung infections and 79 were put on ventilators.

According to the department, 144 million doses of vaccine have been given to Thai people, including 57.2 million first inoculations, 53.7 million second doses and 33 million third doses.

Dr. Thira Woratanarat, a doctor at the Faculty of Medicine of Chulalongkorn University, said that the actual number of infections between 23rd and 29th of April may, however, actually be between 12,936 and 17,967, when allowing for the many cases which go unreported and do not seek treatment at hospitals.

Deaths of or deaths with?

Thai MoPH has long had a very narrow definition of what they'll count as a COVID death. They're not counting cases as COVID deaths unless the virus clearly caused or contributed to the death.

terrible news... but what is Thailand doing for the daily traffic deaths that are much more than 10 Covid deaths in a week

10 new COVID deaths last week, plus an average of 258 new COVID hospitalizations each and every day in Thailand last week.

COVID doesn't cause traffic collisions. And traffic collisions don't cause COVID.

"New weekly COVID hospitalizations in Thailand continued their sharp rise for a fifth consecutive week hitting 1,811 new cases as of last week (April 23-29), up more than 66% percent from the prior week and more than 10-fold from the start of the month, according to newly released data by the Ministry of Public Health."

There's your percentages.

10 deaths from almost 2000 cases is the maths i was going for. and lets pretend the vast majority of these deaths weren't old and already sick people.

You seem to have missed the MoPH's announcement of a 34-year-old Burmese factory worker who died of COVID after being out partying for Song Kran. Via Google Translate:

"The Ministry of Public Health reveals test results of a Myanmar man who has tested positive for COVID-19 found severe pneumonia before death
repeat!! Vaccination can prevent serious illness and death.

Dr. Tares Krassanirawiwong, M.D. The Director-General of the Department of Disease Control mentioned the case of a 34-year-old Burmese man who died in a room in Sathorn District, Bangkok and ATK examination found COVID-19 on April 17, 2023."

As I say a 500% increase of 1 is 5. It may be the new sub-variant XBB.1.16 circulating and if it is it's normal to see an increase. It's said to be more immune escape because of two new spike protiens. It will settle down until the next sub-variant comes along to knock this one off it's perch and take over. All up the numbers are low and it's not considered a variant of concern.

What this fails to tell is if Omicron caused the pnuemonia. Maybe he already had pnuemonia and that killed him. Omicron being an upper respiratory tract infection I would think pnuemonia would be not be a common complication of the virus.

It would be good to know the vaccination status of the 8,382 people infected and treated at hospitals, as well as their age, any underlying conditions and BMI.

The Thai hospitals have dozens of current COVID cases with people suffering pneumonia symptoms.

None of that changes the facts that they got sick from COVID and ended up having to be hospitalized.

"Also last week, the share of COVID hospitalizations reported in serious condition rose to 157, more than doubling from the 73 count two weeks ago and the 19 counted during the first week of April (April 2-8). Likewise, the share of COVID hospitalized patients requiring intubation to breath more than doubled to 79 last week compared to 35 two weeks ago, and 14 the first week of April."

You seem disturbingly willing to write off people (be nonchalant about their COVID deaths or hospitalizations) just because they're older or have some pre-existing health conditions.

Here is an article which assists in explaining the increased numbers

https://www.nationthailand.com/thailand/general/40026928

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) said on Monday that between April 16 and 22, 1,088 people with severe condition were admitted to hospitals or an average of 155 per day.

Of the admitted patients, 73 suffered lung inflammation and 35 required ventilators.

and you seem to be very entrenched into something that is not that big of a threat at all anymore.

yes people are dying. but they also die in the thousands of other things every single day. far far more than covid now. the overall mass death threat that covid once was to the general population is now over.

there is a good reason almost the entire world really isnt even concerned with covid anymore.

And yet you keep gravitating to COVID threads and repeatedly posting on a topic you claim isn't deserving of attention...

Interesting. Can you show me anywhere it states that Omicron is the direct cause of this or is something else going on? Also I wonder on average how many people per week are admitted to hospital with pnuemonia that don't test positive to Omicron?

my thread habits reflect on the general mindset of society how  ???

i could think of 2.5 reasons.

Yet as news continues and new issues from new strains are being seen Covid is still of concern. Covid is also still the leading cause of death around the world and not as you say in your post above:

"they also die in the thousands of other things every single day. far far more than covid now. the overall mass death threat that covid once was to the general population is now over.

https://news.yahoo.com/arcturus-covid-19-variant-spreading-184833692.html

1. According to health officials, COVID-19 is still a leading cause of death around the world, including in the United States where it’s tied to about 250 deaths daily.

2. The World Health Organization is currently classifying XBB.1.16 or Arcturus as a “variant under monitoring,” which is less serious than “variant of interest” or “variant of concern.” However, the classifications are fluid and can change at any time.

You'll notice the Thai MoPH calls it their "COVID" dashboard... Not their influenza or dengue or whatever dashboard.

Dark purple are currently hospitalized serious condition COVID cases, which they use as a category to list people with pneumonia-type symptoms. The lighter purple underneath are those currently hospitalized COVID cases that have required intubation to breathe.

And those all are pretty much COVID Omicron cases, since various Omicron variants pretty much make up all of COVID in Thailand right now.

It would be very interesting and compelling if it turned out most (or all) of these people were jabbed. It would certainly invalidate the rationale which has prevailed these past couple of years, which is that Covid vaccination prevents serious illness and death and that most people who die of Covid are unvaccinated.
