How do you listen to music?

Featured Replies

A long time ago, when I had my stereo system at home, with a record player, I listened mostly to LPs - Long Play records. Without remote, that meant listening to one side maybe for 20 minutes, and then turning around the LP, and another 20 minutes.

All tracks played in order of the album.

I also had my own tapes with music recorded from the radio.

Then some years later, I bought one of those brand-new CD players and good headphones. The quality was better, and it was easy to skip tracks or play them in random order.

And then, for a few years, I listened to music loud in my car. That was the only place where I could do that without disturbing the neighbors.

Since I moved to Bangkok I listened to music mostly in bars, and if I am lucky the "dancers" did actually some dance moves.

And for the last years I looked and listened from time to time to tracks on YouTube.

It is very seldom that I play background music when I work or read a book.

Now recently I bought a pair of nice speakers and a streamer with Roon. And now I enjoy music again - in excellent quality.

I listen i.e. to the album Paris from Supertramp from 1979 from the beginning to the end. Or my current favorite Interstellar from Hans Zimmer.

I relax and maybe close my eyes and just enjoy the music.

How do you listen to music these days? Just background? Do you play old albums from beginning to end?

The picture is just a sample about one of those HiFi systems from long time ago. I wish I had something like that at that time.

Strangely, I rarely do any more.  I brought my CD collection over with me from USA (400+).  Downloaded to hardrive, then expanded that with another expat that had a nice collection.

Use to play them for a few year here on a system I bought here.   Even brought my huge & heavy speakers over from USA, which we now use as a TV stand.

I'll occasionally listen to music on YT, especially if I get a song in my head.  Really don't listen to or know anything current, and I've listened to all the old stuff so many times, really doesn't interest me.  Along with, wondering where my head was when I did listen to it ????

Never music on in the car, unless daughter is with us, then she'll play stuff through her phone to the car system.  She has pretty good taste.

Don't seem to miss it at all.

Music when working, driving or excercising. Either in the car through car soundsystem via phone bluetooth, on bluetooth speaker connected to laptop, or by over ear headphones from phone bluetooth. Super quality. All from YouTube Premium with no adverts. Can create playlists and download to phone too. Well worth the 159 Baht monthly subscription.

Ripped my entire CD collection and uploaded my entire music library to iTunes Match when that service was first launched (about ten years ago?)

I'm really an old school/analog guy, but the convenience of such a service was too good to pass up.

Around the house, I usually stream w/ Apple TV box and listen on either Bluetooth speaker or ear buds.

I listen to music mostly nowadays when I'm driving. I just play it from my phone. When my wife is driving, she uses a CD player in the car. At home, mostly I listen to music from YouTube.

A million years ago, I had an audiophile set up (Sonic Frontiers). And I'd get first pressings of jazz records etc. It was great, but another possession mill stone.

These days,  I graze YouTube on various binges. Love their algorithm.

I cued up Jezabel by Frankie Laine for my wife and it led me down a couple of hours of similar bombast, like Shirley Bassy and Joss Stone. I like old roots reggae and painstakingly assembled play lists are ten a penny. But it could also be 70's African dance bands, mixed in with long James Brown jams.

I like to drop in to some performer from the past and watch the first and last numbers of their long ago live show. I did this with Stevie Nicks and Cher recently. There's too much new Bruce live footage to ever watch, and new Bruce is not a patch on old-Bruce. But if he's covering Highway To Hell or something, I will  look in.

Is your YouTube still connected to some decent speakers?

And if not, why not? Place, money, the complaining wife?

Recently I watched a couple of videos about audio, and it seems lot of wives are not excited about big speakers in the middle of the room...

This is just a sample, not my home.

I have $300 Sony headphones and some Marshall bluetooth speakers. That'll do me.

I used to have a setup not far off from the above. You could hear Elvis breathing. But with digital sound, why bother?

The only places I listen to music is in the car, or whilst working out.

Both are  my own compilations on USB drive. Had the same stuff on them for years. I might be really reckless and use Spotify whilst in my fitness room occasionally.

You can have all digital - until the speakers or headphones.

I have all digital including the signal to my active speakers. But the last part is always analogue to match our analogue ears. ????

Cannot listen to music while exercising. An audio-book, maybe.

I like to like down, listen to music, and do nothing else.

You’re looking at a US$150,000+ system there (assuming associated equipment is at the same level as speakers and amps  (B&W 800d3 and Classe Monoblocks)) not including the listening room.

That system will be far too revealing to use YouTube as a source.

A pair of Bowers and Wilkins PX7 headphones and either YouTube or Tidal streaming. Got my eye on upgrading to PX8 soon.

i have YouTube Premium. My TV is connected to a Samsung soundbar with a subwoofer. I live in a condo, so no big speakers for me.

I have rear speakers, but they are very quiet, so I bought a small amplifier which I have yet to connect.

Although i like music from the 70s and 80s and 90s, Thai ladies want to hear current Issan pop songs. Unless they are 40+, then it's Jintara.

But, unless they are drunk, Thai ladies will tolerate Reggeton.

my front door is pretty thick, but maybe not the walls.

Like thais do, full blast on my balcony with my Harman Kardor speakers, same in my gym, in the car poor original media player and speakers, and with Sony wf-1000xm3 while riding my motorcycle. When travelling I now got new Soundcore Q45 headphones, which I found surprisingly quite good for the price.

I did. Nakamichi cassette player. Technics record player with Shure cartridge. Crown amp and preamp. Bose 901 speakers. Mostly all purchased in Singapore in the early 80's. I still own the carcases.

Nowadays I use a JBL clip 4 attached to my computer. Sad.
