Blocked! French minister threatens to ban Twitter if it doesn’t follow EU rules

France's Digital Minister Jean-Noël Barrot waded into a growing tussle between the European Union and Elon Musk's Twitter on Monday, as he threatened the social media platform's access to the bloc.

 

In comments made on radio network France Info, the minister said that the U.S. company would be banned from the EU if it refused to follow the incoming European Digital Services Act, which goes into effect throughout the EU at the end of August.

 

"Disinformation is one of the gravest threats weighing on our democracies," said Barrot. "Twitter, if it repeatedly doesn't follow our rules, will be banned from the EU," the French minister added.

I have a feeling that 'Digital Minister Jean-Noël Barrot' of France will not be allowed to dictate policy for every EU member state regardless of how important he thinks he is.

The law European Digital Services Act is there for a reason.

The European Digital Services Act, is not only about Twitter.

Google, Micro<deleted> and many other companies will come under scrutenity at end of August.
Most of the big tech companies are acting against the EU laws on the PRIVACY by use of cookies and tracing peoples behavior without their prior approval.
Most of the big tech companies are not paying their due taxes trough all kind of loopholes.
These loopholes will be closed after August.
For once, a good move from the EU that I applaud.

No surprises here. The EU loves to over-regulate, ban, restrict. It's their MO. It's no surprise they are terrified of a free speech platform like Twitter.

 

If I was Barrot I'd be more concerned about the infighting resulting from the corruption scandal engulfing the EU, oh - and the fact that it's largest economy just went into recession.

I assume that you are exaggerating for effect but that is not even close to the truth. 

 

The Belgium government is comprised of a 7-party coalition of unlikely partners (2 Socialist parties, the Christian Democrats, 2 Green parties and 2 Liberal parties) which commands a majority in the Senate, and represents a majority of the voters.

 

Worryingly, the right-wing, anti-immigrant Flemish nationalists polled well but they were unable to form a government.

Twitter is failing to remove 99 percent of hate speech posted by Twitter Blue users, new research has found, and instead may be boosting paid accounts that spew racism and homophobia.

 

Researchers at the Center For Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) flagged hate speech to the company in tweets from 100 Twitter Blue subscribers. Four days later, they say, 99 percent of the tweets were still up and none of the accounts had been removed.

 

The tweets, which included examples of neo-Nazism, antisemitism, racism, and homophobia, violate Twitter’s own hate speech policies, the researchers say.

A Fidelity fund has slashed its estimate of Twitter’s value amid ongoing chaos at the company, implying the social media platform may be worth only a third of its value compared to when Elon Musk acquired it in October.

According to a monthly disclosure, Fidelity’s Blue Chip Growth Fund reported that its stake in Twitter was worth $6.55 million at the end of April.
