I'm a 70 year old Englishman, now living happily in Phisanulok out in the sticks with my 55 year old girl friend, she is a devout Buddhist and I have no religion.

She is a great believer in having massages on a regular basis and I decided to give it a go out of curiosity. To be honest I was a bit skeptical at first but now after 2 different hour long sessions with 2 different ladies she has put me in the hands of a blind man, from what I can gather he is ex-military and lost most if not all of his sight.

I had an hours session on Monday which was completely different to the 2 Ladies both of which have great reputations locally.

I have just finished a 2 hour session which while painful in places, I now feel fantastically calm and at peace with the world, is this normal?

I suppose what I would like to know is this perhaps a way to a better life and has anyone else on here have any experience of something similar or any advice they would like to share.

As a retired cricketer, I took up Umpiring a few years ago. After standing for several hours, a foot massage does wonders for me. I feel very relieved physically and mentally, usually have a nap as well.  In fact our Annual Cricket Tournament, a 7 day event, we have a massage tent and they are kept busy all week with mainly foot massages.
I also occasionally have a body oil, but with recommended masseurs! There are connections from various points of your entire body to your brain. Works for me and any family or friends touring get introduced and they enjoy it..

Happy endings in cricket have invariably involved Ben Stokes! ????

Massages do make you feel good that's the idea, for me foot massages are best, i use to have 2 hour thai massages or oil but it's too long now, you can get injured easily so be careful, i avoid strong massages

I confess to being a foot massage, "addict". Now over 12 years. For a Thai massage, I too would find most too much ... maybe an oil massage needing the muscles but not stressing them nor having sussed strong twists.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

The only reason that you feel good after a Thai massage is because the pain finally stops!

Ha! Some truth there!

I have traditional Thai massage 3-4 times a week. I detest oil, it makes me feel greasy.

One hour in the afternoon with my Bluetooth earbuds and contemplative music sets me up nicely for a relaxed evening.

You never tried massages in the past 50 years? If people didnt feel better nobody would get them. Surely you have heard of pressure points before.

I like Thai massage. If possible, I visit places with blind massage specialist who studied in Wat Poo.

The problem is that there seems to be few people who learned massage properly. And there are different styles. And obviously massage specialists who "feel" how the patient reacts and some who just don't care.

I think best is to try different places and different specialists and keep an open mind what you like or don't like. I.e. some people love massage of the head. Others hate it. Not same, different.

Very true. I only had one really good Thai massage in my life, and this was in Hua Hin. Anybody has a real recommendation for a Wat Po (lets call it Wat Po or Pho, OK ? ????) trained blind massage specialist in the Pattaya Area, preferably near Lake Maprachan, but Pattaya does it as well. But I mean really 1. trained in the temple and 2. blind.

Besides Thai Massage I had once several massages by a professional at the Zurich University Hospital as a therapy for my back pain. His technique was incredible, he barely touched my skin but how he did it had an extreme effect - it hurt immensely and after a while the pain disappeared. Later he showed me how he did it and I could barely believe what I saw. He told me it has something to do with the fascia. So it depends very much on that you know what you are doing. The usual Thai massage procedure that I know and tested (as strong as possible just somewhere) does really not cut it.

I don't think I could ever let a man massage me, it just does not even bear thinking about. I won't even let a man cut my hair.

I visited the place in Naklua a couple of times, years ago, and they did a good job.

Thanks for all the replies, very informative.

The one I had today was excellent, if I moaned he was a bit more gentle and was very responsive to how I was reacting. My only other experience of Thai massages was in the flesh pots of Pattaya and Bangkok which I found to be more about getting your rocks off than being like anything therapeutic, nowt wrong with that but gone are the days when Jeffers could cum for Britain.

To be honest the best massage I've ever had was in Turkey, probably 20 years ago, in one of the oldest bathhouses in Fethiye, a completely different experience to a Thai massage,  a 3 stage affair of steam room , olive oil soap body scrub with a soft leather mitten followed by a liberal wash down with buckets of warm water. Then a couple of beers followed by a rose oil massage, all done by men, totally non-sexual but you feel like a million dollars at the end. Takes about 3 hours to do but priceless, including a shave and hair trim it was about 8 quid.

I will definitely be going back to this blind guy at least for the next couple of weeks.

Again thanks for all the responses.

wow, someone on aseannow needs to tell you about massage.

in an enlightened society, maybe everyone should be forced to have at least one massage per week.

murder rates would go down.

Just like many businesses here Thai massage is mostly done by people who don’t know anything about it. I’ve asked a few times to focus on a problem area and what needs to be done. Never works.

I've studied Thai massage for many years, and now just enjoy massages for 2 hours 3 days per week.
Massage done with metta (loving kindness) is perfection.
Build a relationship with your masseuse and they will learn your body, this enhances both the massage and relationship.
I've been enjoying the same masseuse for several years.

I know know a guy who got a cracked rib at Thai massage.

And I got some kind of rub injury from it too.

Most Thai massage is ham-fisted (or I should say elbowed) brute force and ignorance done by unskilled morons who don't know how to really massage and don't care anyway.
