A shocking incident of a Mitsubishi sedan catching fire sent waves of panic on the busy Phahonyothin road between Tak and Lampang provinces.

The gray sedan, bearing a Bangkok license plate, was completely engulfed in flames near the 676-kilometer marker, in the area of Nasaeng, Koh Ka subdistrict, Lampang province. Initial reports couldn't immediately pinpoint the cause of the fire, reported Siam Rath.

Fortunately, the driver and two passengers, consisting of two women and one man, managed to escape the blazing vehicle just in time.

The car's 40-year-old owner, who had driven from Chiang Mai, recounted the frightening moments that led to the sudden fire. The woman had been returning from a pilgrimage, visiting over 15 temples in Lampang and Chiang Mai provinces, and was on her way back home to Bangkok.

As they neared the scene of the incident, a front-seat passenger smelled smoke and noticed it emanating from the car's console. Immediately alerting the driver, the car was pulled over, but sparks had already ignited a fire in the engine room, which rapidly spread.

The owner, along with her family and friend, were quick to flee the vehicle. They then contacted Koh Ka police station and coordinated with local Lampang rescue services, including the Salaa Municipal Rescue Association, Koh Ka Lampang Rescue Unit, and nearby fire departments, who promptly responded. The fire was successfully controlled within 15 minutes.

The exact cause of the blaze remains unknown. The sedan was powered by gasoline and had no gas installation. It was also ensured under first-class insurance. Further investigations are needed, and the burnt car has been moved to the Koh Ka police station in Lampang for a more detailed examination.

Why do so many cars in Thailand catch on fire…it’s an every day event?

ICEs with extremely flammable fuel might be the reason.  Worldwide issue, not just TH.

USA as an example (ins. stats kept):
