Foreign nationals in Phuket donate blood amid Rh-negative shortage

In an uplifting gesture of community unity, the Immigration Department of Phuket extended heartfelt appreciation to the 121 foreign nationals who donated blood at a special drive held at the Central Floresta shopping complex today.

This blood donation event was jointly orchestrated by the Phuket Immigration Department and the local chapter of the Red Cross Society. The primary motivation behind the drive was to replenish the rapidly diminishing blood supplies in the region. The depletion in supply, particularly of Rh-negative blood, has been attributed to the escalating incidences of road accidents involving foreign nationals, leading to their admission in hospitals and consequentially straining the Rh-negative blood resources.

Among those who stepped forward to contribute to the noble cause included expatriates, learners enrolled in language schools, Muay Thai trainees, tourists who became aware of the drive, and members of the Phuket Immigration Volunteers Group. A special mention was offered to professional pianist Ivan Sharapov for his generosity towards the needy. Sharapov is a highly regarded figure among the local officials of Phuket Immigration and the Russian community present in Phuket.

Yet Thai hospitals throw away the blood they take from people with Haemochromatosis who regularly visit to get therapeutic Phlebotomy/Venesections.

Not the case in other developed countries.

"tourists"

Was this requirement waived?

"for foreign blood donors, the requirement is that they have resided in Thailand for at least six months"

Not the typical tourist but maybe they were Thai tourists.

Maybe TAT should drop the 300 baht entry levy and ask tourists to donate a pint of blood.

They could then donate said blood to the hospital for a small handling fee.

Over the past 3 years I have given around 15 - 20 litres. Perfectly fine blood that Thai hospitals have literally just thrown in the bin for no reason.  Whilst other countries use this blood with no problem. Other people I have met on this forum have had the same issue.

It's incredibly frustrating.

Have I volunteered yet?

Educate yourself before making ignorant comments.
