US expresses concern about the democratic ‘will of the people’ as tension mounts over legal case
by James Morris and Son Nguyen

Top spokesman at the US State Department, Matthew Miller, told reporters at a regular press conference that the United States was concerned about the possible outcome of several legal cases in the kingdom and that the ‘will of the people’ in the aftermath of the May 14th General Election, is not stifled as fears mount over a case taken up by the Constitutional Court last Wednesday alleging that the Move Forward Party has breached Section 49 of the 2017 Constitution in campaigning for reform of Article 112 of the Criminal Code on lèse-majesté.

A decisive 48 hours in Thai politics in which anything may happen with fears of a Constitutional Court intervention removing the Move Forward Party and the candidacy of Pita Limjaroenrat for Prime Minister or the nomination of Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan for the job in parliament attracting more support than anticipated while on Thursday Pheu Thai, if there is not a decisive outcome on Wednesday, will probably nominate property tycoon turned businessman Srettha Thavisin.

As Thailand faces the second round of decisive votes to elect the kingdom’s next Prime Minister, there is growing concern about a Constitutional Court petition which could see the Move Forward Party dissolved. This was referenced on Monday night by the US State Department in Washington DC where a spokesman said the United States was concerned about the situation in the kingdom and respect for the democratic will of the people.

The US State Department in Washington has gone on record expressing concern at the situation in the aftermath of the May 14th General Election in Thailand. A top spokesman for the State Department, Mr Matthew Miller referred to the pending legal cases being reviewed since last Wednesday by the Constitutional Court.

Great article. Clarifies the confusion created by the previous one. The concern is for democracy, not the military!

America will do nothing. They need as many friends in Asia as possible as they continue to try and constrain China's power and reach in the region. America blinked in recent years and its not been going well so far for them as Beijing continues to makes friends with money and economic power. Most countries have a border or territory dispute with China  - the nine dash line and free shipping passage - Vietnam (Ironically Americas old foe is a land border issue and islands), Philippines (Island dispute),  Malaysia (Island dispute), Japan, Taiwan and poor old Australia sitting nervously down under. India won't get involved as it also wants its own influence as it gets stronger. Its a delicate mess and China is unlikely to give up it claims to most of the South China sea based upon a scappy 1946 hand drawn map that gives claim to most of the South China Sea. So America may make a little squeak here and there but will try and cozy up nicely to whoever holds the reins.

Pita is a US puppet- hence their ‘concern’.

The US should mind their own business for once and keep their filthy hands out of Thai politics.

Cute good to know other nations do not express their own views publicly or behind the scenes.

1869 (Wikipedia) at least Thailand has different parties

But it’s only the military backed ones that are allowed to form a government. The fact there are many parties means absolutely nothing other than offering a facade for democratic elections.
US criticism is only going to push the Junta closer to Xi and Vlad because they know these two will not publicly criticise any injustices they may inflict upon the Thai people. It’s all about face.

Well done, Sherlock. It's been this way in Thailand for more than half a century. Nothing is changing anytime soon.

Anyone simpleton could have seen this was going to happen when Prayut hand picked the senate several years ago. Nobody seemed to care back then and so we are seeing the consequences of it now.

Have you known regular Thai people to worry about the future, plan ahead, perform maintenance.....at the time, there were certainly comments and complaints... but tomorrow problems are put aside until tomorrow. Prayut and the team have been smart....

The world doesn't care. The country and its government has no influence and is of no importance to anyone and anything anywhere outside of its borders.

That is true ,, but do tourists think of that too??? It is another problem, not only scamming, overpricing, bad service, no smiles anymore, political unrest etc etc... Other countries  can be a better choice. Myanmar is not attractive to tourists at the moment too

Now the US government is concerned about Democracy in Thailand, but they were quite happy to accept a coup leader as PM after the last elections and didn't seem to object too strongly about the coup leader drafting a new constitution.

It would be better if the US minded their own business as they have more than enough problems of their own. Considering their own political circus, it's hard to take them seriously these days.

There's a lot of benefit to living by the day and not stressing too much about the future. It's probably one of the reasons you are living in Thailand.

Ah yes, the USA. With all the values, ethics and scruples of a pack of soi dogs, sticking their nose into something not at all having to do with them. When will their Navy find an excuse to start “naval exercises” in the Andaman Sea.

I know what you mean, but I think the US and other governments would have known exactly what was going on, yet they chose to ignore it focusing on being diplomatic. It's a bit rich of the US to voice concern now in my mind.

They should have done so when the military were changing the constitution.
