Fairly obvious the falang mentality cannot separate public from private enterprise.

People should be careful what they wish for. The English wanted a high speed railway and look at the mess that government has created, they have difficulty getting the national rail system to run, far less at speed.

I have done many Thai train journeys without a problem, they may be a bit slower but a better chance of getting there.

Spaceports are not intended for manned flight and  being a commercial venture can launch rockets made in other countries.

The spaceport in the north of Scotland has an outline plan to launch rockets made in UK, Germany and the US.

It depends on where the railway line runs, though.

 

I live 65 km southwest of Kamphaeng Phet. There is no western line from Bangkok.

 

If I want to take a train to Chiang Mai, first I have to get to Nakhon Sawan 130 km to the south east to catch a train to Chiang Mai.

 

The alternative is to drive 180 km from home via Kamphaeng Phet to either Pitchit or Phitsanulok and get the train from there.

 

That is about half the distance from our house to Chiang Mai.

 

There is no rail link to Tak or Mae Sot/Myanmar.

 

OYOH if you want to travel around Bangkok you are overwhelmed with choices.

It is widely reported that using its advanced  'Thailand 4 Technology' Thailand aims to be the very first nation to launch a manned space mission to the sun. The launch will be the first from its' new space centre.

When reminded that the capsule would melt, and the crew roast alive - long before reaching the sun, a Thai Government Space Expert replied:

" We Thai have overcome that problem. We're going at night"

Perhaps mastering the construction of high quality sidewalks, underground electric lines, and high speed rail would be a good place to start, before moving into space? Or patrolling the highways for safety?

 

Is it possible some of the goons are dramatically over estimating their capabilities?

Not unique to Thailand Bill. If you live in East Anglia there are no trains running west.

The UK has a GDP severl times that of Thailand and things are not that much better.

If a group of business people can put a private enterprise spaceport together with very little in the way of public funds only a certain mentality would think that the same could not be done in Thailand.

Of course western governments wouldn't be too keen on their residents investing is such a project so the Thais would  look to more enthusiastic partners, fuelling another round  of anti Thai rhetoric.

This is not new Bill, and they have only ever talked about satellites There is an ever growing demand for small satellies, why there is 2 spaceports under construction in the UK, potentially a lucrative investment.

While Thailand did officially launch a satellite last year, it was manufactured in the Netherlands and launched in French Guiana. The Thai-made satellite is the first thing in space made in Thailand, aside from some trees on the International Space Station.

East Anglia is not much different to when I was stationed at West Raynham in the 1960s. The nearest station was in Kings Lynn, about 20 miles away by the infrequent bus service.

If Thailand is only launching satellites it is much much cheaper to hire a launch vehicle than build a spaceport. With more expertise and training Thailand can build their own satellites and ship them to a launching site rather than building their own spaceport.

 

This is not Thai bashing but financial commonsense.
