PM orders working committee to tackle illegal narcotics

A working committee has been set up to tackle illegal narcotics, with the active participation of the military and the aim of reducing the problem within a year, according to Thailand’s prime minister Srettha Thavisin yesterday (Sunday).

 

After witnessing the destruction of seized narcotics by the Office of Narcotics Control Board in Samut Prakan province, the prime minister said that details about the working committee and how it will tackle the problem will be disclosed in due course, including such issues as the seizure of assets from the traffickers, money laundering and the time frame for the destruction of seized narcotics.

 

He noted that the military will play a more active role in preventing the smuggling of narcotics into Thailand from neighbouring countries.

IMO MFP should be grateful that the powers-that-be staged a self-coup (judicial/legislative), and they were well clear of this dumpster fire.

It may be a high time to legalize heroin as well? And cocaine too.

I would like Thailands reputation to become "best place in the World" to smoke Cannabis, but the "worst/most strict place" to do hard drugs like Yaba/Meth. They have room now for the Meth heads now the Pot heads have been released.

Total waste of time. The war on drugs has been going on for decades with no noticeable effect. People like taking drugs, these users create a potential pools of profits for unscrupulous people, and surprise, surprise, those unscrupulous people traffic drug to make profits.

You're probably correct, but bear in mind the BIB via immigration control the border entry points and can be very short-sighted under the right conditions.

Thailand, where BOTH the military and the RTP provide security, is a reliable trans-shipment point for drugs (Meth) manufactured in Myanmar/Laos to ports in Thailand where they are moved on to other countries. A lot of seizures are destined for Australia.

 

Further, Thailand is a reliable trans-shipment point for precursors heading to the manufacturing zones.

 

Up until fairly recently there were busts of 1 ~ 5 million meth tabs nearly weekly.

 

But a lot of this meth is also for the local market, where usage has sky-rocketed as prices have dropped. Reports in the press indicate prices as low as 2 baht/tab. Ten baht might be more accurate based on small volume purchases.

 

Possessing more than one tab of meth is now a significant criminal charge. It used to be 15 for that limit.

 

Crystal meth is also a big problem, but that is a bit more expensive.

 

There are ~ 200,000 incarcerated for drugs, the bulk are for meth.

 

I'm not sure what the PM thinks a committee can accomplish given military rule for nearly 15 years (out of the last 23) has only seen a dramatic increase in the problem?

Surely a bullet to the head for all people found carrying narcotics or giving them the choice to consume all the drugs found on them in 48 hours would cut down a lot of criminality - simply as I doubt any would survive

They had a committee prior but it was Non working…

The best option is to make all drugs easily available via proper government facilities and very low prices - this removes the huge profit margins that attracts the criminals, they won't compete with the government at low prices, nothing in it for them - plus it gives the authorities a good idea of what's going on and the chance to start steering people away from usage. 

 

I know, a pipe dream (no pun intended) as there is big money to be made by too many influencial individuals.
