Goodbye Alcoholism, Hello Sobriety!

I have been quite ill these past couple of weeks due to multiple ailments.

Alcohol may have played a significant role in the weakening of my immune system recently.

 

I went to my doctor concerning my issues and she prescribed me a potent painkiller.

Now I had never heard of this drug before and after doing a bit research online I was skeptical at first.

I took 1 tablet that evening after my meal as directed and the effects were almost immediate.

All my pain had been alleviated and I was feeling pretty good.

I continued on with the course until finished and I no longer have any pain related to the initial condition.

 

Now it seems that, for me at least, there is a peculiar side effect with this specific substance, and that is I can no longer stand the smell (and even the thought) of alcohol. Since I came off the pills at the weekend I haven't touched a drop. I tried to have a glass of whiskey on Sunday night and almost threw up into the glass.

The smell was rancid, chemical, and totally unnatural.

 

It looks as though this specific drug has potentially rewired my neural circuits to give me a total aversion to alcohol.

Lets see how long it lasts. I am hopeful and to help me on my way I will be heading to one of the many cannabis dispensary's in town to purchase a bottle of CBD to help me on my (no doubt) long and winding road.

 

Here's to sobriety, that booze just ain't worth it!

Alcoholism and sobriety are two extremes on a black an white scale. As with most things, consumption of alcohol and your need to do so is on a far more analog scale (with infinite points along the path).

TLDR; once someone becomes alcohol dependent, becoming tee-total might be the sensible (or only) safe option, but there are a myriad of ways to enjoy alcohol without becoming either.

Well, your title is not accurate really.  You will always be an alcholic, just trying to be a sober one.

Thanks for the positivity guys. I am well aware that the road ahead is a long one but I have a pretty solid plan going forward. 
 

I really wanna try this CBD out. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. I just hope that it sits right with me.

I find it very hard to take you serious because of your many strange posts.

Maybe all of those are related to alcohol?

If you are serious about fighting alcohol then i will support you in your efforts.

CBD oil is not going to save you,the only one who can save you is yourself!

No amount of money or medicine can do what you have to do.

It can be a long hard fight,but if you want to believe yourself saying that you can win there is a good chance you will make it!

Good luck in your effort,make sure there is no alcohol near you.

The mirror can be your best friend or your worst enemy.

Do you get support from your wife?

Friends that will tell you,just a few will not harm you are not your friends.

I don’t think cbd will save me but it could help.

 

i would rather that than a benzodiazepine which could result in replacing one addiction with another. 
 

I believe I can do it this time round. My perception of alcohol seems to have been drastically altered over the weekend. Knee jerk reaction? Possibly. But it’s something I’ve never felt before. Usually by this time I would already be 3 glasses in. The thought of that is revolting to me right now. So make of that what you will. And thanks for the kind words.

Many like me drink wine not whisky - it seems to be the hard stuff that does the damage.

I would like to offer the suggestion that if you are serious about stopping drinking you may want to consider taking a break from posting at least during your initial efforts to abstain. Why do I suggest this? Three reasons:

 

#1 You have developed a persona on the forum which I suspect is at least partially fueled by alcohol. If you continue to post, you may be under a strong temptation to have a drink in order to get your repartee mojo in gear, that is to get in a upbeat, animated frame of mind.

 

#2 You have posted many threads discussing drinking, the pleasures of drinking, and trying to quit and then throwing in the towel. In the process you have probably developed a following of similar minded people who enjoy drinking, who enjoy having you as a cheerleader for drinkers, who may encourage you to fall off the wagon, who may undermine your efforts to quit, and who do not especially want to see you kick the sauce. It 's kind of like an alcoholic who still wants to hang out at the local tavern and tells themselves they'll still go to the tavern, just drink non-alcoholic beer. You need to remove yourself from any environment which you associate with drinking.

 

#3 This forum can often be harsh and abusive. While you do a good job of projecting an image of having a thick skin and letting slings and arrows roll off your back, I'm sure it sometimes gets to you, as it would anyone. If the pattern in the past has been to use alcohol as a buffer against abuse you encounter here, it may be better to avoid exposing yourself to any abuse that may trigger wanting to have a drink. 

 

The final piece of advice I would offer to anyone trying to kick a habit is to allow yourself to sleep as much as you want, drink tons of water, allow yourself any food you want, and try to have as completely stress-free and responsibility-free an environment as possible.

 

Again, good luck. I have a sibling who recently got diagnosed with bile duct and liver cancer, so I have been reading up on liver disease. Apparently, liver disease is often asymptomatic until it is advanced, so if your body is telling you you need to take better care of yourself, don't ignore it, and endeavor to make your health a top priority.

and with cbd, keep a very close eye on liver function. This is especially important for a recovering alcoholic that might have already caused extensive damage to the liver over years of alcohol abuse. Even moderately compromised liver function would not be a good starting point for cbd use. With any drug use the liver function should be closely monitored in the OP's case. Liver function tests are cheap and easy in Thailand.

A couple of drinking alcoholics i know struggle to stop, basically they don't really want to, they can last a week max. One of those will likely be dead in a few years max

 

2 non drinking ex alcoholics i know say it has to go to real low before you can give it up
