Chiang Mai Mote Road Repairs

Featured Replies

Does anyone have details on the massive road repair project that’s already been going on for many months all around the Chiang Mai moat?  They are constantly tearing up the roads in multiple places and then hastily patching it back up, leaving beyond what appeared to be temporary steel or asphalt covers on the holes. The construction teams themselves block one or two lanes of traffic at a time, making the traffic at least twice as bad as it would normally be.  Then, the ugly repairs they leave behind make the roads  more dangerous than they already were, especially if you’re riding a motorbike.

I assume they are doing some underground repair work on sewers or electricity or something, because they’re only making the roads worse.

I’m curious if anyone knows an estimated timeline of when they will be done, and if they plan to actually put the roads back to normal at some point or if they’re just going to leave this patchwork of steel and assault bumps everywhere.

I also wonder if anybody knows why they’re doing this in the first place.

I believe the (insert municipal authority here) is moving some or all of the above ground cables (i.e., electricity, phone, whatever) to make them below ground cables.

It's also my understanding that this is a multi-year project and, if so, get used to it.

I've also heard from another source that it's about moving the cables below ground.  Multiple years of this sounds like hell.

I was hoping they were searching for parking spaces...

They’re placing utility conduits and upgrading the manhole joints beneath the roads in the old city. Then at some point in the future, road resurfacing.

Careful of those hole coverings. This truck, Ratchadamnoen, next to the temple food court on Sunday walking street.
