Not an expert but it would not surprise me that some of the more beautiful just keep getting cosmetic surgery.  I also agree that a lot of them just like a lot of the bar girls that get too old just blend into the background.

 

I also wonder if there are that many old ladyboys around.  

I hav to wonder if like a lot of things, there is a glut of young LB just starting out and as with the baby Boomer generation there is going to be a huge issue in 20-30 years with them.

My guess is that they all clump up in the usual places during their peak earning years, so it looks like there's a lot of them. 

 

Then they scatter to the wind when they can no longer make a go of it, so they're not all concentrated in one place.  They're still around, but you don't see 50 of them on one block.  More like 50 of them scattered over several small towns "back home".

You never see any older transgender people. They seem to just disappear after about 35. Surely if that was, as is often claimed "not a choice," then they would continue in that persona, presumably forever.

Seems like you mainly look for ladyboys and transgenders in the nightlife – I've seen many older than presumably 35 years of age, but I also visit other places in than the partyzone – there you also don't see many grannies in the go-go clubs...

 

Seriously, many of the transgenders have "normal jobs" where you can still meet them after an age that seems like 35 – I don't ask ladies about their age outside the nightlife, so I don't know if they looks older than their physical age – some of them might also settle at places, where they are not that public visible for foreigners.

 

There is not much litterature about Thai ladyboys, but the book "Ladyboys – The Secret World of Thailand's Third Gender" by Susan Aldous and Pornchai Sereemongkonpol gives a good impression from nine interviews and profiles, including some at high age...

I knew a former manager of the Landmark Hotel, David. Later he was Davina. A nice old lady, you had to look twice to get doubts if she was born that way.

This is just one example who I know. I guess it might be the same with others.

There was one in Pattaya that used to go around the bars selling some sort of fruit ( that I don't know ). Had the silicone boobs and looked a bit sad. Not at all attractive.

 

I think that once they lose their looks they just go back to the village and hide.

 

I don't know the stats in LOS, but I understand the suicide rate is quite high in transgenders.

That particular variation was an unknown quantity to my explorations in the more exotic parts of Bangkok or Phuket for many years ( I never went to Pattaya for a long time, to my eternal regret ), and even after it was not a universal delight, as not all even knew how to do it.
