Bali Hai Ship Operators Call for Removal of Shipwreck Causing Odor and Traffic Obstruction

Pattaya — Ship operators in Pattaya have expressed concern over a shipwreck that has been anchored off the coast of Bali Hai Pier for over three months. The ship, which is in a dilapidated condition and is sinking, is emitting unpleasant odors and obstructing water traffic.

The Pattaya News reporters visited the area near the pier on November 14th after being informed of the wreck by nearby ship operators. Upon inspection, it was found that the ship is a deteriorated large, two-deck passenger vessel that is partially submerged in the sea. It is tethered to the footpath railing with ropes and is plagued with seaweed and shells.

 

According to a captain of a nearby speedboat, who preferred to keep his name confidential, the ship used to be a popular tourist vessel with a capacity of 150 people. However, it has not been in use for over three months and has been causing significant inconvenience for other ship operators in the area, the captain said.

Bad  odour, are there some fishermen still aboard?

Of course, the owner can't be found...well, they havn't actually looked for him yet...but we'll need a budget!

Since when have Thais been bothered about bad odours when the National Dish is Som Tam?

I highly doubt that vessel could hold 150 passengers and judging by it's state, it's been abandoned a lot longer than 3 months.

It's been stripped of it's upper decking, wheelhouse, whatever canopy was used to shade the rear portion of the upper deck as well as anything else of value from the looks of it.

Probably sprang an "expensive" leak, was stripped of anything of value and left to sink.

Navy can tow it a kilometer off shore and hasten it's sinking. Not worth making a "dive site" or "artificial reef" out of it.

No, just a few tourists who were caught below decks when she sprang a leak. 

 

A friend of mine and I took a very similar boat over to Koh Larn back in 2006 and were horrified about the way the vessel was over loaded and operated.
