newnative
I know it's an unpopular position but I strongly believe that tourists should not be allowed to rent and drive motorcycles. Period. Too many accidents, too many tragic deaths like these two. Yes, it was the Russian's fault, in this case. Doesn't change the fact that these two young people would likey still be alive had they been prohibited from using motorcycles. 1 1

Popular Post spidermike007
Many of us drive motorcycles or scooters here, and it is dangerous getting on the roads with some of these other drivers. Getting on a scooter, or a motorcycle anywhere in Thailand, much less Phuket, Phangan, Dark Tao, or Samui without a very good helmet, and a great deal of skill and awareness, is like playing Russian Roulette with three or four bullets in the chamber. It is absolutely asking for problems. The degree of recklessness here is astounding. And many foreigners come here thinking "how much trouble could I get in on a little scooter, on a tropical island"? Well, the answer is alot. The amount of foreigners who are killed on the Southern islands is staggering. Most are not reported in the media. I had a friend who worked for Samui rescue for many years, and said the numbers were about 30-60 a month, on Samui, Phangan and Koh Tao. The official number is about 3 a month. Rider beware. Use as good a helmet as you can afford, and do not use these eggshells pieces of crap. They crack at the first impact, and what lies underneath them? Your skull, which is very delicate. I have been riding bikes for 49 years. Without any serious accidents. A few minor ones over the years. Riding a bike here is very dangerous. If not the highest, one of the highest fatality rates in the world. And an accident here can be very costly, to your person. Just ask yourself- do I have enough problems already, without a broken skull, or smashed head, or face injury, or lost eye? I have three friends who have been in motorbike accidents on Samui within the last several years. One still cannot walk, or talk or function on her own, from a motorbike accident, where she hit her head on the pavement going only 20 kph. The other one has lost alot of his mental capacity after hitting his head. He insisted for years he would never wear a helmet. Now, he seems 15 years older. The third one is a close friend, who was hit by a sidecar, and nearly lost his leg. 11 operations later, he can walk, but with a limp, and the leg caused him constant problems, many years later. It always astonishes me here how the average person behaves, once you put them behind the wheel of a car or truck, here in Thailand. Most seem quite kind and considerate. Until they get into their cars. Then, all bets are off. When I was growing up and learning to drive, I remember so much of what my lovely mother taught me. She had so much wisdom, and was a very kind and respectful woman. She was constantly emphasizing the need to be courteous to other drivers, and pedestrians. She imparted alot of wisdom. I wonder how many Thais get that kind of coaching and inspiration from their folks. 6

connda
Luxembourg family demands justice after fatal road accident Dear Luxembourg bereaved. You will get "justice." Just not the type of "justice" that you would expect in a predominately European nation. For those of us who live here, we know: This Is Thailand (TIT). It' ain't Luxembourg, it ain't the EU, it ain't the US - it's Thailand with its own very unique problems with traffic fatalities and injuries, as well as perceived justice and compensation. The death or injury of a foreigner here isn't like a Thai citizen who is either on Social Security or Thai Government Insurance. So that paltry amount of 50K in mandatory insurance doesn't need to go to covering hospital expenses. That's just the way 'road justice' (and justice in general) works here and it ain't like a first-world country. Money talks, and many victims of traffic accidents settle for a rather low payout as compared to the West. Then toss in the circumstances that it was two Europeans killed by a Russian driver? There isn't even a Thai involved. I feel for the parents. Lost my own daughter and only child at 18 to another driver's extreme negligence. You don't get over it. Especially when there is no closure or "justice." My daughter's killer was fined $400. That was "justice" in the United States. 2
