‘He’s dog-whistling’: Trump denounced over anti-immigrant comment

Donald Trump is facing a backlash for repeating a remark at a political rally on Saturday where he said undocumented immigrants to the United States are “poisoning the blood of our country”.

The former US president’s comments were the latest example of his campaign rhetoric that seemed to go beyond the lies and exaggerations that are a trademark of his stump speeches and instead go into territory of outright extremism or racism. In November he was widely condemned for calling his opponents “vermin”, language that echoed that used historically by dictators and authoritarians.

 

Trump, who is the overwhelming favorite to be the Republican nominee for the 2024 race for the White House, made the comments at a rally in Durham, New Hampshire, attended by several thousand supporters. He added that immigrants were coming to the US from Asia and Africa in addition to South America. “All over the world they are pouring into our country,” he said.

The White House hit back, saying that Joe Biden believes “our leaders have a responsibility to bring the country together around our shared values.”

“Echoing the grotesque rhetoric of fascists and violent white supremacists and threatening to oppress those who disagree with the government are dangerous attacks on the dignity and rights of all Americans, on our democracy, and on public safety,” White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said in a statement.

Trump’s comments come days after he warned that if he is re-elected next year he would act on immigration like a “dictator” – but only on the first day of his term. He has since floated the idea of sending potentially “hundreds of thousands” of US troops to secure the US-Mexico border, build a network of immigrant detention camps, and “begin the largest domestic deportation operation in American history”.

“He’s disgusting,” former New Jersey governor and Republican presidential contender Chris Christie told CNN Sunday. “He’s dog-whistling to Americans who feel under stress and strain from the economy and conflicts around the world,” Christie said. “He’s dog-whistling to blame it on people from areas that don’t look like us.”

I just don't get this backtracking and ducking business.  He makes hateful statements and then when the press picks it up he claims he was misunderstood.  Pretty cowardly.  And then he whines away, poor me always the persecuted one.  "I whine until I win" he said in the 2016 campaign.  I still can't figure why the grass-roots folks don't back away from him when he shows his yellow belly in this way.  And the media abets him: he says straight out he favors strong man gov't leaders, touting fascist slime like Orban and Kim, promising to be a fascist on day one, and then comes headlines "Does T____ Favor fascism?"  This is as dumb as when the weather report says it will rain asking the question "will water fall from the sky?"

In comparison to his aspirational role models, neither Hitler nor Mussolini were known for weasel-ly  taking-back statements.  He's weak and he's a coward, and he's afraid the world is going to realize it (actually I think many world leaders already know).  And no number of his superhero NFTs is going to fix that.

It will do more than that to this American. He gets a majority of the USA popular vote and the social contract between me, as an American citizen and the majority voting for him will be dissolved. I will no longer have a country

I’m sorry, Trump was not standing still, and he was indeed speaking words -- paraphrasing the words of Adolf Hitler, in fact. During his latest “poisoning the blood of America” rant, he included Asians among the despoilers. His legions of brownshirts pick up on this. Does this mean then that I can’t travel back to the US with my girlfriend without having to worry about her safety?

This was indeed (and by no means the first time or restricted to him) the language the nazis used in the 30s. They then passed laws to prevent interracial sex (then with Jews) to 'protect aryan blood'.

 

Some people don't realize how close to the edge they are and exactly what evil they're cheering on.. That man is a likely presidential candidate for godz sake.

 

Actually I have enough faith in the average American not to give him a majority. But he's never had a majority. That didn't stop the US's archaic and not fit for purpose 'electoral college' from selecting him as president though in 2016. Ludicrous.
