I am often told that the British don't have cuisine, so I thought okay let's give dim sum a go.

 

So the menu was tiny balls of pork.  No seasoning.  No garnish.  Just a little ball?  The flavors were bland and lacking in creativity. ''steamed pork ball''  ''steamed pork square''  ''steamed pork triangle''.

 

I am not sure what country Dim Sum is but they struggled with the drinks menu.  It was just the same hot bland water.  No flavor at all.  But they add pepsi and sprite to the menu.  So they include American drinks because they couldn't or don't have there own drinks?  And there's no dessert menu at all?  I mean you just don't have that?

 

The plate was a tiny rectangle and the waiter didn't bother to bring two more plates for the late guests.

 

Well that was a disappointment all around.  I will stick to my British food with it's delicate and layered flavors, varied textures and amazing value for money.

We need some pictures.

 

Like where was this famous dimsum? on the street with blue chairs? MK? Some "buffet" place god forbid?

 

 

Next time you will probably write: That steak was horrible. I will never eat steak again.

Yeah, sure.

 

There are huge quality differences in food. That shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone.

 

 

It is perfectly possible that you just experienced a poor example of Dim Sum. I'm sure there are plenty of top quality Chinese restaurants for you to try in Thailand.

 

Dim Sum is one of my favourite foods, but after 15 years in Bangkok I've still only had good Dim Sum in two or three places and they were very expensive restaurants. 

I doubt the OP would have gone to a good Dim Sum restaurant.

Dim sum is Chinese cuisine and literally means 'touch the heart'.  There are many choices of steamed and fried food and even different regions of China have different specialities for that region.  Unless you say where you ate the food the review is not much use to us.

Have you ever tried Thai food in UK or USA for example?  Quite often nothing like the variety and flavour you get in Thailand, even when the restaurant owners are Thai as they often respond to customer complaints and 'dumb' down their food.

I presume the bland hot water you are referring to is the Chinese tea?  Again, numerous different types and flavours from the quite earthy 'boh lei' to the fragrant and perfumed 'heung pin'.  Chinese tea shops in Singapore Airport have around 100 different types!

Proper Dim Sum restaurants do also have a wide variety of desserts.

I suspect you simply didn't know how to order.

Hot water?  They serve tea to everyone.  Why?  Because that's part of Dim Sum, and they charge for it.

Dim Sum is actually having tea with friends & family, and having small dishes on the side is optional.

I agree with the OP. Dim Sum is mostly underachieving globules of pork with a bit of hohum shrimp in the mix.
 

Even at the high end, you will wish you had paid less for a proper entree than a sad collection of odds and sods. I have had it all over the world at every price and have never been wowed. I like the idea, but it’s wholly lacking in imagination. It’s like tapas (another letdown for the money) for try hards.

 

Best to date was the W hotel in Silom. Good, but hardly great.

You obviously did not try the chickens feet

I have eaten dim sum . Both in Hong Kong and Beijing.  And also in the states.  Never had an issue.  But I just didn’t go anywhere to eat it.
