Me thinks Putin spoke with forked tongue there, because we all know Trump is his favorite candidate by a factor too large to compute. Putin owns Trump, he knows exactly how to play him, and he knows that Trump admires dictators like Putin and Kim and aspires to become one himself. Putin can run rings around Trump with no effort at all. Putin can play high level chess on several boards at once, Trump is more of an intermediate checkers kind of guy.

Just to be clear: I am no fan of Putin, I despise the man and what he’s done to Russia (and Ukraine). But intellectually speaking, Putin is way above Trump’s pay grade.

I saw an interview with one of those MAGA freaks not too long ago, and he said that Trump could stop the war in Ukraine by just calling Putin and speaking to him harshly. All the MAGA cult members standing around nodded in agreement and they all 100% believed that to be true. Had to pick my lower jaw up from the floor after watching that.

Often? Putin had praised Trump numerous times before. I think he is starting to recognize that Trump is in a rapid cognitive decline and speaking out how he feel about Trump now. Obviously the signs  of Trump’s cognitive decline can be seen by him inability to remember names and inability to express coherently.

NATO is a treaty alliance, not a patron/client relationship. Close to half of NATO countries are paying “their share” (i.e., 2 percent of their GDP on their own respective militaries), or very close to it, and every frontline NATO country has already achieved that 2 percent threshold. NATO is such a strong deterrent that it has maintained peace in Europe, for the most part, for the past eighty years. Historically, isolationism has never worked as a viable strategy for the United States; active deterrence has proven to be better at containing conflict.

 

And I am so sick and tired of people parroting the refrain “protect your own borders and not someone else’s”: just a week or two ago the Republican House refused to consider a bill that would have imposed extremely strict border controls and provided foreign aid at the same time. Their reason: it is not politically expedient for Republicans to “protect the border” at this time.

Plus the fact NATO countries has agreed to increase to 2% of GDP spending by 2024. Trump unilaterally tried to nullify an international agreement with Allies. From some of the comments above it appears some US citizens have a very little understanding of why the US invests in defense in conjunction with it's allies.

Of course! Either way! Border security and foreign aid are entirely separate issues! In fact, there is currently a standalone foreign aid bill before the House, and their line now is they won’t accept it unless it’s connected to legislation on border security -- even though they had just such a combined bill two weeks ago, and they didn’t bring that to the floor, either. The only reason that *nothing* gets through is because Trump believes that the country going to hell benefits him, Trump, politically, and the cowards running the House will do whatever he says. It’s plain as day.

 

As for “giving billions to foreign countries,” yes, it’s aid, not a loan. But the aid in the form of weaponry comes directly from US arms manufacturers, benefiting US workers, so the money in a very real sense stays in the country. Say what you will about the military industrial complex, and I’d agree with much of it, but that’s not the only factor driving world events, and the situation on the ground in Ukraine requires our assistance for a host of reasons, the greed and corruption that characterizes the arms industry (and many other industries) notwithstanding.
