You would think a country known for hedonism and wild nightlife culture would be discussing any other topics aside from alcohol related issues. And now a Buddhist day approaches - again - where all alcohol sales are banned whether you are Buddhist or not. And then they'll be an alcohol ban if they ever have have elections again (is there any point?) when even non-voters are banned from buying a beer. You can legally buy alcohol (and drink it in bars) in some areas until 4 am but between 4 am and 11 am then 2pm and 5 pm " cannot" in theory anyway and as a fact in supermarkets like Big C and Lotus's both of which have massive displays of the 3 Thai beers by the case. Get to check out 1 minute past 2 and the till won't process the purchase and the cashier says sorry too late. Go in to a small local shop and it's a few baht more but they will enter the sale in a notebook and I assume ring it up on the till later.. if they even have a till. Keep the 4 am to 11am by all means but the 2 to 5 pm thing is ridiculous in this day and age. I do remember the licensing hours in the UK, and on Sundays a total ban in Wales, limited hours in England and all shops shut all day. And the rush to get one in at the call "last orders" on any day having to swiftly down that pint as a few minutes later the call was " time ladies and gentlemen please" and there was no arguing with that unless you were a favoured local and the landlord was offering a " lock in". Back then I could also buy several pints and 10 Embassy from the cigarette machine all for 10 bob for a cracking session. Showing my age I do believe with these comments.
