Well, the boys in brown will not be excited over legalizing casino, gambling etc. as it will slim the little brown envelopes drastically. In essence it is the same with alcohol-ban hours, bar opening hours and the non-existing prostitution subject.

Who in there right mind would build a casino in Thailand all that investment money and then the next government come in and decide gambling is a blight on Thailand and make it illegal again, just look at the weed situation

Korea does it.

 

If the objective is the locals' gambling money, sure. It should be a non-starter.  But if the objective is employing thousands of locals, filling thousands of hotel rooms, and bringing in big talent for floorshows, etc, I think that balances the societal costs.

 

But it'll have to be carefully managed, lest Thailand end up like so many gambling meccas where the promises of quality of life improvements have been fleeting.

At the one near me in Toronto, Canada, there have been a number of suicides by "addicted" players. One sad story worthy of mention is, a frequent player took her savings for her daughter's wedding to the casino on her final occasion thinking she could increase the $10,000 wedding fund. Subsequent to losing it all, she hung herself in the casino washroom.

Others have offed themselves in the parking lot after a bad loss.

I would hate to think of poor Thais losing the rent, mortgage or grocery money at the local casino. 

There is a story about a casino in south of France or Monaco. They have special people walking on the parking and in the park, to watch for any suicides and to move them to another place,...

In Cambodia locals are banned from the casinos

Hopefully have descent Las Vegas style Sportbooks with plush chairs and wall to wall TV's.

 

Put a few in Issan to stimulate growth and jobs sorely needed.

when in blackjack is there ever a time when 2 cards are face down for a player ? also dealer has 3 cards. player always draws 3rd card before dealer.

 

if it's really blackjack we are talking about that is.

Way of topic, but....

Originally in blackjack the player's initial two cards were dealt face down and subsequent cards were face up.  If a player wished to "double down" he would turn up his initial cards, add an extra bet and then receive one card face down.  When I was learning to be a BJ dealer, the casino switched from old style face down dealing to all cards up format, so I learned both styles.

 

The picture included in the OP could be blackjack dealt in the old format.  But, since the there is a pile of disordered chips (the "pot") in front of the player's hand (KK) I believe a hand of Texas Holdem is what's being shown in the photo.  The three Aces are part of the five community cards used by all players to make a five card poker hand.

 

To address the actual topic....

I have spent a LOT of time in casinos and it became obvious to me that many people do become addicted to gambling.  I think easy access to a casino will make that problem worse than it currently is.

 

I also think the ability of the Thai government to effectively oversee any casino licensing and regulation is very suspect.  I saw many casinos violate the stringent government regulations in Nevada and when customers complained the outcome of the investigation was rarely in the customer's favor.

only ever visited a casino in canada and they were always face up. never went to any in usa so things may be different there. also the dealer holding 3 cards before the player hits.

 

i wasn't actually talking about blackjack. i was on topic if we are being picky :)
