If you said you'd engaged her in a political discussion in Thai then I might believe you. I speak reasonable Thai for over 30 years and whilst its true that some locals can be a bit wary ('you know too much') I don't ever recall an unwillingness to take my money. Strange because the only reason I learned Thai was that, back in 1980, very few girls spoke any English at all. Now that I am old and they don't care, speaking Thai opens many doors that wouldn't otherwise be opened and I get gratuitously complimented on my Thai fairly often even though I am far from fluent. Thais a re fairly perceptive and with even just a few words they know I've been around the traps a long time. I never get push back from speaking Thai.
