SportRider
1 hour ago, pomchop said: it also does not seem credible that thai staff would try and scam him with his thai wife there to argue his case...seems most thai gals who pay the bills for farangs go over the bills in detail and quickly call out any overcharge. Unfortunately, having a Thai partner with you does not prevent bill-padding or short-changing. In fact, even Thais themselves can be victims. Especially in certain bars where such practices almost seem to be policy. I won't mention the name but one of these is in Treetown. I am fortunate to be very numerate even when drunk. Skipalongcassidy
Here's a novel idea... if you are going to get so sheetfaced as to not remember how many beers or drinks that you have... pay as you go... for all you Thai bashers... tabs are run up all over the world... usually far greater than the extra 200 baht that may have been added in this case.

ryandb
over $30? Seriously if you are drunk, there's a good chance you don't remember what you ordered, 4 or 5 imported beers and a glass of wine for the wife would likely trigger that (don't drink so could be wrong) obviously if he was on just chang, leo etc. and wasn't there for his entire session then he likely got done but write it off and sleep it off in your own bed rather than a concrete floor in a cell 1

Why would his wife be buying "lady drinks"? I doubt she works in the bar. Or do you think she was trying to get more money from her husband and into the bar by buying the girls "lady drinks"? Hanuman2547
I always check the chit entering my bin cup after it is placed there. It does two things. It lets me keep a running total of my bill and lets the wait staff know I'm checking the bill every time a drink is served.

Kerryd
12 minutes ago, BangkokReady said: Why, though? She wanted bar girls to spend time with her and her husband? Could be where he met his "wife". All foreigners like to pretend that their wives were working "in a bank" or "at the DLT" or "at a high end car dealership" when they met them but the truth is, a lot of them met them at the first (or 2nd) beer bar they ever went in to. I've seen loads of girls who like to drag their latest "catch" to their old bar to show off how generous their new ATM is. And he usually doesn't have a clue but likes all the attention he (and his ladyfriend) get from the staff. Pumps up the ego you know. Lol - when I was working on a camp outside of Kabul in the early 00's, we had a firefighter that could have been a Chippendale's posterboy. The kind of guy who would suntan on a berm and there'd be a gaggle of girls trying to sneak peeks (seriously - the women's tents were on the other side of the road and from our office tent we could see them clustering around the edge of a tent to peek at buddy). He went to Phuket on his first holiday. Fell in love with the 2nd girl he met in a bar. Came back to work and when his next holiday came up, cleared out his belongings and flew back to marry her. Seems he thought he'd just be able to take a PADI course or two and then open his own dive shop and start making money hand over fist. When that didn't work out and the money ran out - she divorced him and went back to the bar ! (As he'd left without giving notice so he could screw the company out of a paycheque - he couldn't come back to work either.)

Ms. Anchisa, 55, manager of the beer bar, and Ms. Warunee, 39, a general employee, told police that at 2 a.m. today a German man and his Thai wife came to their bar to drink beer. When they finished a bill was given to him but he refused to pay saying they had overcharged him and that he did not drink that much. They then tried to explain the bill to him, with this totalling around one thousand baht, but he refused to listen and then attacked them. They alleged that the engineer had pushed and slapped them as well as pulled their hair and held them to the ground then pulled them both out to the middle of the road. There were cars passing by but no one came to help them. by TNR Staff The beer bar workers being beaten up by a German engineer. Digitalbanana
The headline could be described as "unnecessary labeling" or "irrelevant stereotyping." By mentioning the person's profession when it has no bearing on the story, the headline is potentially perpetuating a stereotype or generalization about engineers! Twenty odd years ago I was talking toa guy in a bar and he called check bin, I said you off somewhere, he said no just pay regularly to reduce the risk. It used to be quite common for someone to be seeing a girl working the bar and she would slip some chits into other bins. Prime targets were those in a group or the intoxicated. Back in those days there were no forums making out it was unusual and only Thais being the perpetrators.

One can (mostly) avoid that by looking at the bill(s) as soon as they arrive. Fortunately, people tried to rip me off as soon as I set foot in Thailand the very first time. Having never been to a developing country before, I learnt my lesson quickly, which helped me later, not just in Thailand, but also other countries. Hardly ever had a problem in bars, as the staff sees me looking at the bill when it arrives, so they don't even try to paddle my bills... 1
