Popular Post piston broke Posted April 11, 2024 Popular Post Posted April 11, 2024 When i first arived in Thailand the neck end of 20 years ago, the late great Bob the Pig told me two things: 1) You'll be amazed how many milionaires you'll bump into that live above shops and 2) This place attracts the "are souls" of society and the worrying thing is that these "are souls" don't think they're "are souls" ...... 2 2 1 7
Popular Post KhunLA Posted April 11, 2024 Popular Post Posted April 11, 2024 If making the financials for long term visa, I don't know how anyone needs to be struggle here. As suggested, you should have a budget, if no will power, and simply live within your means. At our ages, should have learned that decades ago. 400k a year/40k a month, and if you can't live on that, you're doing something wrong. 7 1 1 3 1 4

Popular Post Furioso Posted April 11, 2024 Popular Post Posted April 11, 2024 I was struggling in the West then came here and instead of spending 2500 Euros a month I'm now spending about half that. Plus, not having a car saves me even more. I'm really liking the savings here in Thailand. 3 1 3

I average 660K a year, I see no reason to live as a miser. 1 1 1
Popular Post OneMoreFarang Posted April 11, 2024 Popular Post Posted April 11, 2024 The good thing in Thailand is we can live cheap if we want to or need to. Meal for 50B on the street, or >1000B in nice restaurants. And obviously it's possible to spend a lot on entertainment - if there is enough money for that. When I arrived in Thailand with little money, I lived cheap. Now, not so much. 3 2 2 6
Popular Post retarius Posted April 11, 2024 Popular Post Posted April 11, 2024 I have seen friends struggle here. It is not pretty. As poverty comes in the door, love flies out of the window. I'm comfortable at the moment. However, I don't want to live too long and get sick here, and use all my money on medical bills. 1 1 3 3 1 6
Popular Post AlexRich Posted April 11, 2024 Popular Post Posted April 11, 2024 I wouldn't go to Thailand without a decent income/pension and a back up plan if anything happens that would lead me back home. You can live relatively cheaply if you want, but it's wise to have a cushion for unforeseen events. 1 1 2 1 5
Popular Post proton Posted April 11, 2024 Popular Post Posted April 11, 2024 Not as much as I would be in the UK. Visited mate last year his council tax bill was over 200 quid a month and water 40 quid even if none were used, then the sky high gas, electricity and petrol prices. Might be too hot here, but no money worries 4k baht a month pays all the same bills. 3 2 1

That's assuming you're on the income method and not on the "money in the bank" method. Lots of guys are whittling away at their 400K or 800K and then have to go to dodgy agents. (The ones that can fake a bank statement) Not hard to imagine they'll eventually struggle to pay the agents. Bad news, though. If you're struggling in Thailand, "back home" isn't going to be any cheaper. Being a Covid refugee for a couple of years proved that to me. The saving grace is that you can pick up a job back home. But unless you have some special skill, that just qualifies you for a miserable existence. 2 1 1 2

Agree, however money gets chewed up with inflation, e.g. cost of everyday items going up, making your baht less and less. Assets are your best way to grow your money, suffice to say, I know there are a lot of naysayers here, but Cryptocurrencies, naming Bitcoin as a great store of assets, which also grows exponentially, that said, it is a high risk, high worth asset, and 99% of baby boomers will miss the boat when it takes off to the moon after 20 April this year after it's halving cycle, and into the year 2025. We all know the other types of assets there are to invest in, but there is no other that the above which has outperformed ALL major asset classes in the past 10 years. Forget the negative press that you have all heard, it is now approved as an ETF and is here to stay, doubling in value since mid January. Don't believe me, just look at it's 15 year record. Being brave isn't the absence of fearing the unknown. Being brave is having that fear but finding a way through the unknown. To answer the original posts question, never short of a dime, why, because being retired doesn't mean you sit down on your rear end getting fat and drinking beer. It is the time of opportunities, being out of the slave trade hours and 30 year mortgage belt that we all worked to make a crust to survive, now to reeducate ourselves and look for opportunities to further excel and add to our retirement nest egg, after all, it can be a tax free exercise and really is effortless now that we have the time, all you have to be able to do is you read, invest some money and make some long term decisions, 2-4 years. But as I said above, the baby boomers will miss out because it's all too difficult to retrain the brain to the new electricity or internet, i.e. Cryptocurrencies. See you on the other side, I hope. 1 2 5

Maybe not. Back in 1998, you could also stay in Thailand long term on a dozen visa dodges and programs that just don't work today. Unless you have a WP, there's no telling when they'll start cracking down on whatever "occupation" you choose. I suspect the 700+ foreigners they caught out recently on Phuket thought they were safe... And let's see what happens when the Revenue Department has some incentive to scrutinize money coming into Thailand at tax time in 2025. 1
