In the 10 years in Thailand I have NEVER carried my passport around and NEVER have been asked to produce it.

Is this a thing now? Seems Thailand really wants to tighten up on smelly foreigners.

Ten years, without ever having used a bank, been to immigration or checked into a hotel! What did the immigration official ask for when you arrived at the airport?

Don't worry grandpa, the people who want to understand it, will understand what was communicated, the others, like you, better sit down and relax their heart.

If you had said "In the 10 years in Thailand I have rarely carried my passport around and NEVER have been asked to produce it except at places like banks, hotels and immigration".  You would have been believed because that is my situation!  But to say you have NEVER carried it is a lie unless you are here illegally!

Yes. About 5 years ago there was a clamp down in Bangkok looking for overstayers, illegals etc. There were reports of people being stopped on the street in the Sukhumvit area for passport checks. I was in a taxi at the Asoke junction traffic lights when 2 coppers approached and a

sked to see my passport.

If a non-traffic cop wants to see ID, he’ll almost always first ask for a passport. Quick, easy, understandable. Since the law just calls for official ID to be carried, NOT a passport specifically, they’ll accept another form of ID UNLESS you’re under suspicion.

Causes for “suspicion” can vary widely, but can be just “being a place where legally questionable activity has been occurring rather too often.” In that case, any old ID may not reveal your immigration status and may be dodgy anyway. Under suspicion means the probability of your overstay or being wanted for a crime elsewhere has increased. Your real passport may therefore be demanded. 'Course, carrying no ID ensures it will be as well.

So then if you don’t have your passport with you, you’ll need to produce it within 24 hours. Wisely, they’ll not trust you to do so on the honor system, but detain you until somebody brings it to you.

But if heavens! no one can bring it to you, then the police, for a service charge, will escort you to its location. Note that at no point will you be under arrest or charged or penalized simply for not carrying your passport. That’s not an offense.

Not being able to produce any passport is, however, is a whole different matter, obviously.

There was also a time around 7 years ago when clubs in upper Sukhumvit were raided.  Those raids were targeted/drugs related though and not random passport checks. Both Thais and foreigners were subjected to urine tests. Any foreigner that couldn't provide a passport on the spot was locked up until someone could get their passport for them.

"Under suspicion."

I have no problems carrying my passport with me.

Up 2 u. Most people, including me, rarely do and wouldn't, unless necessary, such as for air travel or a visit to my local friendly IO. I use my pink card for most ID requirements. But I have a Thai DL and phone photos as well. BTW, I stay away from dodgy places and people. I try not to act suspiciously, but in my case that's no great effort.

Stop bickering and be polite and ask a specific question about something you misunderstood. I might help you.

So I will ask the question(s) you have asked for!

Were you lying when you stated "In the 10 years in Thailand I have NEVER carried my passport around and NEVER have been asked to produce it" or are you here illegally?

Which one is it?

Liar or illegal resident?

In the 10 years in Thailand I have NEVER carried my passport around (if I didn't need it) and NEVER have been (forcefully) asked to produce it.

That would have been easy to understand as the topic were about police controls / arrests due to overstays and the comments were about being passport checked by police.

But it's clear scottiejohn will just continue bickering, so I will give him the last word.

Then why did you not write that originally and why did you not immediately reply with that defence when challenged?

PS;  Please note that he (RYG) has amended his original post to now read as above!
