Strangely Thaksin was freely elected, was the ONLY PM to complete his 4 year term, and was re-elected with an overall majority.

He's now free and clear, and if you don't think he's joined up with the current elite who now realize there's a much larger threat on the horizon - young people who aren't tied to or interested in perpetuating the old system whereby the same dinosaurs pass the public purse around to pilfer.

I know many thais that used to be Taksin followers, but now despice him! The way he broke all election promises the party gave just to save his own ass, is not welcomed by many. This show for everyone what kind of selfish person he really is. He does not care a bit for thai people and never has. I hope the next election will prove his downfall.

Yes, indeed. And there's the rub - Thaksin was popular because of his policies which basically spread the money from the public purse around via the Tambon Councils and other means. This is why he was a threat to the powers-that-be and had to be turned into the Thai Beelzebub and exiled so that things could return to business as usual. Now, after his exile, he's returned to become just another one of the dinosaurs, and the fact that he's joined with his persecutors leaves nobody in doubt as to where his fealty lies and what his objectives are. Purely tawdry. They always knew he was a liar - but who cares when he was doing things that were wildly popular to the majority of the people who happen to live in the Northeast and North of the country. Now he's just another piggy at the trough.

 

On top of that, the Thai people have found a couple of much younger politicians who appear to be much more serious about change. It's no wonder they both won the election and were both subsequently dispossessed of power through dubious means and the entrenched senate and other old power structures. There's only one way this system ends, and that's with fresh young blood in the streets, but this time none of that country plonk, let's get some fine Bangkok claret if we wish to see real change.

A young activist died last week whilst being held in a detention centre after she was refused bail yet here we have a former government minister who was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment and did not spend a single night behind bars  WHY ?

Let's assume the deal was come back, join the junta parties, maintain enough popularity to fend off MF.

All very well and good but this coalition is subject to instability. Thai conservatives hate Thaksin and his family, that will never change, so there's simmering discontent just beneath the surface.

Just imagine being forced to accept the return of a man who you've spent countless years demonising! Must stick in the craw.

The junta parties can accept many of the PT MPs, they're no different to them, old style MPs with their own loyal fiefdoms, but they can't stomach Thaksin's insufferable arrogance and desire to dominate everything.

I wouldn't be surprised if they encouraged him and his family to take a helicopter ride one day.

But one can assume the real movers behind Thaksin's return want him to work his populist magic on the populace again, neutering MF.

If he can't do that, then he is of little use.

So I'm guessing  he'll be given a free hand for a year or two, but if it seems his star has lost his shine, then perhaps some new charges could be threatened to persuade him to once again return to counting the grains of sand in the Dubai desert.

Perhaps you haven't spoken with relatives/friends of those who were killed or injured responding to a call to arms from Tony.

 

Next time you are speaking with the Thais you speak to perhaps ask their thoughts on Tony then vs Tony now and how they feel about such deaths and injuries.
